Stayed here for two days and had a great time....it helped that the weather was perfect. Room was good with a nice balcony overlooking the pool and harbour, all rooms have a sea view. Beaches are around 5 minutes walk. Central to all the restaurants and bars. Good pool, a bit chilly though. Paid around €100 per night.

La Grande Motte is a purpose-designed & built resort area, which means lots of concrete & cookie-cutter highrise hotels & apartments, which must be a madhouse during season. If you never go there you will have missed nothing, but should you find yourself in the area, or have pre-booked a hotel as we did, then you can do far worse than the Mercure. Spotlessly clean interior, but they must not expect guests after the summer season. All rooms have balconies with water views, but the outside furniture was so dirty that we had to get rags & clean it ourself before we could use it. The single time that everything about a Mercure Hotel was not spotless. Oh well, off season is off season everywhere, not just here. The central resort area is easy to navigate on foot from the hotel, which many cafes, stores, etc. Just don't count on most of them being open late/early, if you are there during off season. Probably better to stay in nearby Montpellier, but a night overlooking The Med is never bad, & it is an upscale resort area.

The Mercure is in a superb spot overlooking the marina and with fabulous views. But the interior desperately needs some TLC. Our room was clean but oh so shabby - paint peeling in great chunks off the window framework. The remnants of dead flies or mosquitoes on the interior door surrounds added to the general air of neglect. The staff, while not unfriendly, are not exactly helpful and one gets the impression that guests are a bit of a nuisance. Breakfast was in a vast banqueting room on tables set for ten or 12 people. Dishes such as scrambled egg had obviously been congealing since being put out at around 6am. By 9am the whole thing looked distinctly unappetising. There was no-one in attendance throughout our buffet-style meal. Charges for breakfast or for the car park are left to the honesty of the guest, as we were asked at check-out: "Did you have breakfast" and "did you use the car park?"

The Mercure at La Grande Motte is well located for exploring the town by foot. It also has a secure car park if you are driving as I was. I was looking for a base to explore the area and also a change of pace from all the medieval towns I'd been staying in. La Grande Motte offered a real change of pace, and the Mercure was a very convenient hotel to do this from.

The rooms were good - clean and comfortable - but the best part about them were the views over the ocean.

I don't know if I would go to La Grande Motte again, but if I did, I'd definitely stay at the Mercure.
