If you're passing through Ceret I would definitely recommend a stay at the Hotel des Arcades. Ok, it's not exactly up to date, and it doesn't have all the modern amenities, but hey, this is France! What you will get (if you have a room at the front, which we were given without asking) is a long balcony with a view over a beautiful square. The room we had was enormous, lots of character and fraction of the price you will pay at more upmarket destinations.
Ceret is at its most beautiful in the evening, when the daytrippers have all gone. It's almost like you have the small town to yourself, and there are great little restaurants, some are basically people’s houses where the occupants are happy to feed you with whatever the dish of the day is.
