The Le Richemont is neither a truly bad nor a particularly good hotel so you have to work hard to have a decent stay since most of the senior staff give the impression it would be run a lot better if they didn't have to deal with guests. The good points are its position on the river opposite the cathedral and old town and five minutes walk to the railway station and a 20-minute train ride into the Gare de l'Est in Paris. Breakfast is not included in the room price and is €8.50 although they do not charge for young children, and is a reasonable Continental buffet provided it is kept stocked which it is in only rather lackadaisical fashion. It was noticeable that the staff were helping themselves to coffee from a professional machine at one end of the bar and not the urn for guests at the buffet end! However, the urn coffee was quite pleasant.
The bad points mostly relate to the hotel's dire need of an update and the staff's laissez-faire attitude. The younger studenty staff were fine but the others seemed distracted and not very interested in their guests. Booking into the rooms requested meant third time lucky with part of our group with a specific pre-ordered request for a room with a bath (for children) and space for a travel cot. Eventually the receptionist admitted she had not read the booking properly. One room was rejected partly because of the mould on the bathroom walls and the musty smell. That was explained when the rest of the party were allocated the room immediately above and discovered the carpet in part of the bedroom was soaking wet from a hidden leak from the bathroom plumbing. From the damage and attempts to repair the wall plaster it was clear this was no recent problem and was affecting the room underneath.
That aside the Richemont was clean but appeared to be something of a DIY job in terms of the decor and fittings. Lack of air conditioning meant the proximity of the train station and road bridge were a source of noise through open windows on a humid night. An overhaul and soundproofing could make this a very pleasant hotel.
A four-day stay for four adults and two children came to just under €700, more expensive than another much superior 2* we next stayed in further from Paris, but it was our choice to stay in the town rather than go for one of the chain hotels on a retail park at lower prices despite the proximity of Disneyland Paris. For a one or two-night stay Le Richemont is tolerable but make very sure your room is what you want on arrival.
Room Tip: As previously reported, the higher up the hotel, the less dingy the rooms.
