“Good value for money - with good transport links”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 May 2010

We travelled to Paris to celebrate my 4oth birthday. We were on a budget - so had to shop around for a decent hotel. Given our budget - there would always be a compromise. The hotel itself was lovely - a traditional French building with period features. The rooms were furnished with antique beds and period wallpaper. The down side being that the rooms were very small - but then it didn't matter for the amount of time spent there.
The location was a fair way from the centre of Paris. However, is was a 10 minute walk to the metro station of the Grand Arch at La Defense. (You could be lazy and catch the RER over-land train - 2 mins from the hotel - and then change to the metro). It was roughly 6 stops to the L'Arc de Triomphe and a few more down to the Louvre - all on the yellow line - so very easy to navigate.
Breakfast at the hotel was substantial. Although there was a good patisserie across the road as well as a few cafes if you wanted to get breakfast a bit cheaper.
The staff at the hotel were extremely helpful and also allowed us to stow our luggage after we had checked out (11am) The only downside perhaps is that there are no tea/coffee facilities in the room (and a bit steep at 4.5 Euros downstairs).
The bathroom was very small - but well equipped (and surprisingly modern compared to the rest of the deco)
All in all - I would definately recommend the Hotel George Sand.

“Cute but a bit too far from town”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 May 2010

Cute building and "film-set " like interior.
We stayed for 2 nights and were fortunate to have properly the best room in the whole hotel ( the room with the largest balcony fronting the street). Room decor over-the-top frenchie and furnishing a bit old and dated. Bathroom facilites is good.
Ok for a 3-stars hotel, but it is just a bit too far away from Paris central.

“Very cute Victorian hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2008

I was very satisfied by this hotel, and its location.

I don't understand why other travellers complained about the location because it's absolutely fine. It's a 10 minute walk to the metro station, (the train station is around the corner, so when you arrive from airports/large train stations, you just arrive at that one with your luggage). The walk to the metro is really not that bad, we went for three days so we walked there in the morning and back in the evening, and that was fine. Perhaps if you would go for a week you could opt to stay in Paris, but for a short stay it's fine because you're out all day.

The area is nice, the metro station is in La Defense, which is a great thing to see in itself, amazing architecture, and from there you can actually see the Arc de Triomphe, so you don't even realise you're slightly outside the ring. (By the way the hotel is only 7 kms from the Eiffel Tower if you look it up). So all in all in half an hour you've travelled from the hotel to the Eiffel Tower.

The hotel is very cute, I love the Victorian style, the rooms are small but I think that's the way it should be in a hotel like that. It's clean, the bathroom is modern and well kept. Some of the staff speak English, others not, some friendly, others not, didn't bother me.

I would definitely recommend this hotel especially for those coming by car because you avoid the Peripherique madness.

“given my time again......”

I booked this hotel through late rooms- and paid a third to half of the price. I would have been very annoyed to have paid a euro more for this lack lustre establishment.
Firstly, it is too far away from Paris itself. Its a good 30-40 mins to walk to the metro and then catch the various trains to wherever. Its only a euro a ride ( buy a carnet of tickets- 11 euros for 10 tickets ) but its a drag. Also la Defense metro is confusing to get in/ out of and i found it a bit worrying late at night around there.
The hotel-nice roms, clean linen, plenty of shampoos etc. Downside- I initially thought the staff were low key for the purpose of enhancing our stay. It transpired that they were actually disinterested, almost to the point of rudeness.
I advise you avoid the harriden that haunts the foyer of a morning- cleaning. A very highly strung and aggressive individual- one has to avoid being knee capped by this woman with whatever cleaning implement she has to hand as one attempts to leave. We worsened the situation, failing to hand our credit card style key over on morning 2. As a result we were chased down the road by her - shouted at and physically frog marched back to the hotel....It really felt that guests were an inconvenience.
The rest of the staff were as miserable as sin, spoke little English and were on some sort of mission to be as unhelpful as possible.
Other negatives- no chest of drawers, TV fixed on a volume level that only with your ear affixed to the screen would you hear, very tight with the towels- ask for more. Very dodgy and pokey lift. No assistance with baggage.
No information in the room re the running of the hotel, breakfast, taxis, metro etc. Mini bar did not stock any alcohol bizarrely..
As for local ammenities- there is a good range of shops on the doorstep. The Chinese restaurant a few door up is excellent all round and affordable. A word to the wise...Paris is extremely expensive, especially eating out. On occasions its a good idea to get a picnic together and a bottle of wine- our best day was lunching in the park on the grass below the Eiffel Tower- with all the Parisian!!!

  • Liked — it was clean and reasonably spacious.
  • Disliked — the general unhelpfulness of staff and location.
