I came here after Chateau Noirieux, where the experience for the money, or indeed any money, was somewhat less than sparkling. Did it colour my view? Only in so far as being able to make a direct comparison.

The Rooms

It is a pricey stay but is far superior to Noirieux where we paid similar rates. Our rooms were in the carriage house. Ours (35) was huge and very private. We had a small terrace and giant if slightly dated marble bathroom with separate bath and shower cubicle. Niggles were a lack of light in the shower and the weird wall mounted haridryer although I always take my own anyway. In the main room the cream carpet had a couple of minor reasonably inoffensive stains. The bed was big and very comfy and the room had air con and electric shutters. This room was 450 Euro per night.

My daughter's room (23) was quite small but perfectly adequate with all of the necessary facilities (air con, decent shower, etc.). A couple may find the bed a little small. It was 215 Euro per night.

The Food

Breakfast was usually on the terrace unless a little chilly (although my husbad forced me to brave it anyway one cooler morning and if the staff thought we were bonkers they didn't show it!). Lots of options (although only saw the menu on the first day so just as well we remembered it - could have asked for it and it would have been no trouble).

We'd been told when we booked that the restaurant would be closed for 2 of our 5 nights, and that was fine with us anyway as fancy Michelin starred food every night can get a little tiresome. Our dinners here were really lovely. I did witness one chap getting cross and leaving and service was sometimes a little slow but never so much as to have me finger tapping.

The location is great for many of the Chateaux - although I don't mind a bit of driving - and the hotel and grounds very pretty.

Most importantly the staff are great. Attentive (apart from one or two minor hiccups) and good fun without intruding.

Stayed at this property for 3 nights. Chose this hotel after seeing it on Travel and Leisure list of the hotels with the best service so expectations were high. As others have written the property is gorgeous. We reserved one year in advance and the only room available was their standard room (lowest category) for a very reasonable 215 Euros/night. Our room was on the top floor of the main house, room 11 and it a style suitable to the architecture of the building but was not very luxurious. Have to say we were a little underwhelmed by the room, but this place was supposed to be all about service.

The real service standouts were the front desk staff who also perform the roll of concierge. We were made to fell like family from the moment we arrived and every request was not a problem. We had intended to eat at the restaurant for dinner but after sampling it for breakfast on our first day did not want to risk it as the food at dinner is very expensive and breakfast did not go well. Breakfast was a service disaster, my scrambled eggs were served promptly and after finishing them 15 minutes later my partner was still waiting for the only thing he ordered, an assortment of fruit. It was very strange for me to sit there for what seemed like forever, done, ready to go, while my partner had not received a morsel of food yet.

Overall this is a nice place and I would stay here again. Our stay made me question the way service is ranked in Travel and Leisure. Every single Four Seasons I have stayed at has had service far superior to here as did our next hotel The Regent Grand in Bordeaux.

Don't get me wrong. This hotel sits in an amazing setting: a beautiful mansion and stables (turned into more rooms) on 60 plus acres of wooded wonderland. I guess I was just a little disappointed with how the rooms were decorated. It was a cross between French antiques and modern brass & glass furniture. However, the staff was exceptional, going above and beyond any of our expectations. So, after a 3 night visit, I almost forgot about the semi-cheesy decor and chose to remember it as a friendly, inviting getaway. The food at the restaurant was amazing, by the way!

Upon arrival, our first impression was, we were going to love this property. The forest-like park you drive through is stunning. The manor is stunning. We had room 40, a suite in the a carriage house. Very nice. Unfortunately, the restaurant can destroy your stay. We ate in the Michelin two-star restaurant the second night. Disaster. There were a lot of tables filled and this seems to be the problem. They fill the restaurant beyond their capability. Service was extremely slow and just not good. We got our starter 90 minutes after sitting down. And when we mentioned it to several restaurant staff, not one was surprised. Almost like it was a standard problem on a busy night. When we did get the first course, it was completely cold. We noticed others around us were as disappointed so we called over the Maitre de Hotes, who could not have had a worse attitude. Told us everyone came at once and that is that. When we checked out and we mentioned our disappointment with the restaurant, she immediately said, "were too many tables filled?" And to keep in line with food problems, the breakfast is just not very good. Not a lot of fresh fruit available. You pay for the breakfast and they chose the one fruit to bring you. When we asked for fruit we saw brought to another table, we were told we couldn't have it. We would give the hotel and its property a 5; the restaurant alone would get a 1. So we settled on the 3. We go to France every year and stay at amazing properties. Not worth staying here when there are so many better.

As I value fellow travelers reviews, I wanted to add my opinion to the preceding reviews for anyone who may be interested. To be short, I would absolutely concur with the many positive remarks. My husband and I stayed in room #2 (main house) for three nights in mid-June. The room was charming with a comfortable bed and spacious bath. Our rate included one dinner and breakfast in the wonderful restaurant. The food and service were certainly worthy of a high Michelin rating. The weather cooperated on our last morning at the hotel and we were able to have breakfast on the beautiful terrace -- a real treat.

What made this hotel truly outstanding, in my opinion, was the welcoming and friendly service that the staff exhibited from the moment we arrived until we left. After an evening chat with one of the desk clerks, I was struck by the extreme pride that the owners and employees took in their hotel and it's operation. How nice it would be to find that level of care at more hotels, regardless of the number of stars attached to them.
