Arrived full of expectation for the last night of our holiday, expecting a great experience. The check-in was friendly and courteous. The building itself was impressive - a very old monastery, combined with stylish modern touches (the French do this sort of thing very well). Our room was very modern - however there was no air-conditioning: on a day when the temperature reached 32ºC this was a disappointment. So, probably 8 out of 10 at this stage...
HOWEVER, then we went down for a nice drink before dinner. This seemed to confuse them, as firstly they did not know where to sit us (outside would have been nice) and then it took about 45 minutes to get a couple of glasses of champagne.
After yet another long wait, we ordered our meal, then waited and waited and waited and waited to order our wine... It took over an hour for them to take our wine order, despite asking 5 times. The wine then sat there for another 45 minutes, while we repeatedly asked for it to be opened. Eventually it was opened, and the waiter immediately poured it into the glass right to the brim: no small amount for me to approve here! Imagine my surprise and delight when a dead fly floated to the top!!
Along the way, we asked 6 times for a carafe of water, and my wife's duck was inedible.
Basically, it was the worst service I have ever experienced in any restaurant, anywhere in the world. And it was not just us - many other people were complaining, one couple resorting to getting a bottle of their own wine from the car!!
The following morning I was presented with an astronomical bill, with no apologies, and no attempt to ameliorate the situation. The hotel director refused to talk to me on the phone.
I cannot recommend this hotel until they fire their head waiter and food & beverage manager...
