We were in Joigny for a wedding, staying at the Paris Nice for four nights. The town itself - which is historic and attractive - needs but one day to explore on foot...with a great Saturday ( ..smaller Wednesday ..) market. But cycles can be rented from Locaboat ( dont arrive during French lunch hour 12.00-1.30) to explore the rolling countryside out beyond the station and main road. And it is possible to do some extensive hiking in the lovely forested amazingly uninhabited countryside to the north east of the town on the hilly side of the river...however you will need to take walking/cycling maps of the area with you, as no one there has much idea. Should be able to walk and catch a train back from the next town/village with a bit of timetable checking beforehand. The hotel is really a restaurant with delicious food - attracting many locals; (much more scrumptious than the three star restaurant on the river) the hotel is a bit of a side line, but run in a very friendly way by all. However, from Sunday pm until Tuesday breakfast there are NO staff at hand - and no food - and the hotel becomes in essence a rented room, although the 'garden' - really the restaurant eating area- is still there for residents to use. One other thought - it's not a quiet location ..heavy traffic passes by ...but it is a convenient location for travellers.
