“Expectations and reality”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

We planned a special stay for christmas on our way back from Normandy to Switzerland.
Our expections were a comfortable & luxious room with a view and an very good Restaurant for the x-mas dinner. The R&Ch book let us believe we had found what we were looking for.
Unfortunately that was not the reality.
I will grant that it was Dec and possible not staffed as normal. But that should not excuse that the service seem to lack attention.
Let's start with the room, great view towards the river with a big terrasse, unlucky it was too cold to use. The room was medium size but it did not show atmosphere, missing a renovation.
The aircondition which was also the heating system was extremely noisy that we had to switch it off during the night, means a cool room in the morning. The public rooms also missing an atmosphere of cosyness or well decorated.
The Restaurant was very good but did't not make up for the disappointing room, which had its price. Conclusion: would we go there agin ? for dinner a definite YES, for the Hotel a NO

“Expensive and not worth it.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

We were in the somewhat empty annex and while the room was lovely, it had some awkward things about it. The bedside lamps were imbedded into the headboard and couldn't be moved so one was constantly hitting it with one's arm or head. The wifi had to always be re-booted. And the bathroom was badly designed - in order to use the sink one had to close the door. At these prices, bad design is inexcusable. The staff while plentiful wasn't particularly gracious.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the annex if possible however, I can't imagine that its worth the extra money...

“Sad place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2011

The hotel does not match the restaurant, which is good. It is not the best I've seen, though.
The hotel should three stars. The mattress had not been changed in many many years, or the comforter for that matter. The a/c worked as a heater of course so we had to sleep with windows open. The reception was not trained at all and spoke little english, spanish, or italian. believe me, I tried all three.Sad place, sad town....nothing else to say.

“Excellent. Very friendly.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2011

Part of the Relais & Chateau Group and so not cheap. Last year our car broke down and it took 10 days to get the part, so we used the hotel as a base, returning after a few days travelling, then off again. The hotel stored all the items we had in our car, made the same room available to us on our return each time and gave us an attractive rate. My wife fell while in Joigny and the hotel arranged for the ambulance and collected us from the hospitat. Some rooms look over the peaceful river and it was delightful just look out at the river and up to the town with its bridge. Food was excellent. The suites with balconies are just superb-- find the extra! . Reception and dining staff all spoke English and had just the right attitude -- friendly and attentive without being obsequious.

Room Tip: Suites with balconies whilst expensive are perfect. wew felt that we lost nothing in the dining expe...

“Brilliant Chefs Do Not always make Good Hotelliers”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 May 2011

We enjoyed Wonderfull, imaginative food here well worth the 3 Michelin Stars and in my opinion the price. We were shown the Kitchens and introduced to the Chef before Dinner which was a wonderfull "touch" and much appreciated.
The Hotel was not however worth the money ! We had a large Bedroom with a Terrace overlooking the River, but our terrace was also completely overlooked by the rooms above whose occupants could also hear all that we said , it also had an unswept floor and dirty table & chairs! The television suspended on a bracket from high up on the wall smacked of a cheap US Motel . The Hotel Car park is too small and the street outside can get busy. The approach to the front of the Hotel is a little down at heel and the whole place is in need of a makeover considering the room prices. In all there is very little atmosphere in this place so it never feels "special"
We would recommend The restaurant here as it is a special experience, but stay over the River (short 5 minutes walk) at RIve Gauche ..a hotel run by the same family but with a lot more ground and space at one third of the price.

Room Tip: Hotel: No. Restaurant: Yes (Stay accross the Rive)
