“the ancient oak trees, knights of Malta, stupendous meal, eclectic room - repeat performance”
I have stayed here twice, ten years apart, both times in the same room.
Firstly the room - I stayed in a very large ground floor room with the bathroom in the turret of the chateau - the room is comfortable with twin double beds, antiques and heavy red velvet drapes and there are two entrances (or exits) to the room. The bathroom - while an amazing stone circular room- is decorated in 1950s fairly gauche pink porcelain with burgundy shag pile carpet... the room had not changed. This is an old chateau .. in the french country side - and personally I find this eclectic dichotomy very refreshing after the sterility and sameness of modern hotel rooms. But - if a sleek bathroom is important to you - you probably wont like this room. It was fun to have a bath in the very generous bathtub looking out over ancient oak trees and the stone walls of this very old turret - a staging post for the Knights of Malta.
The food
The meal ten years ago was the singularly most memorable meal of my life. I looked forward to a repeat performance. This time the meal was not quite as good but still excellent and certainly one of the best meals during 6 weeks in France. The service is excellent and breakfast in the garden followed by a walk around this fabulous property steeped in a rich and colorful history , is to me, what the french countryside is all about.
If you are driving from Paris to the South of France, it is well worth a detour to Chagny and Chateau Bella Croix.
