“Amazing property.. good service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

We spent two nights at Chateau Richeux to visit Cancale and Mont St Michel and really enjoyed the property.

Location: We took a train from Paris to Rennes... then rented a car to drive up to Richeux. It was a pretty easy trip. The property is incredible!!! The views of the ocean and the grounds are so pleasant and relaxing. There are benches everywhere and it is so quiet. Could not be better!

It should be noted that Richeux is not right in town in Cancale, and is about 40 minutes from Mont St Michel. For us, this was the perfect place to relax after Paris and yet had things near enough to spend a little time visiting.

Rooms: We were in the Carvi room on the 2nd floor. The room had 2 windows both with a sea view which was nice. The room was a decent size with a couple of chairs set conveniently right by the windows so you could just stare out. The bathroom was rather large with another window with a sea view, and nice fixtures. The only thing about the room is that it is looking a bit tired... not significantly, and at this point I would say it still adds to the charm, but could use some updates soon.

Food: We had only reserved ahead of time for one night, and were unable to make a reservation for the other night when we arrived, so be sure to book ahead if you want to eat there. The dinner we had was very good... in particular we enjoyed the cheese cart of local cheese each accompanied with a bit of chutney or something to match. Breakfast was great although perhaps a bit pricey (in line with other places we stayed though). My husband particularly enjoyed that there were oysters available for breakfast.

Service: The service here is good, but not outstanding (the prices are reasonable though, so maybe this is in line with the prices). The front desk were generally helpful, but when we asked for a recommendation of a restaurant in cancale they ended up sending us to a restaurant which was closed that day and didn't give a lot of help as to how to get there. The restaurant service was similar... good, but not outstanding.

Overall the property, food, and peacefulness of this hotel would definitely bring us back again. We really enjoyed unwinding here. The hotel has tons of potential to be an absolutely top rate destination, but with that would probably come higher prices... so for my money I was very happy with where it is now.

“Rooms-C, Restaurant-C, Views-A”

This Chateau needs a facelift. The rooms are tired, even though the views are magnificent. Regarding the staff, they are extremely friendly, and do go out of their way to be helpful. Dining at their restaurant is suppose to be a gourmet experience, but we found the food to be average to good and the plating was far from impressive. Other than your room or their restaurant they lack public space. Location is good and you are able to do easy day trips to surrounding sites such as Mont Saint Michel, and St. Malo. Overall impression though, is both the hotel and restaurant need some work and regretfully is over priced for what it is.

“Beautiful location and enjoyable stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2011

Stayed for 4 nights in July 2011. We were in a suite in the main building, which had beautiful views over the garden and sea (“Sesame” I think). Room was large, and we liked the period decoration. Staff were consistently friendly and helpful, and we found the atmosphere positive.

Continental breakfast was E23 per person per day – we only ate it once, in our room, because in our opinion this would have been considered average quality at E5.

Ate at the restaurant once. Food is clearly subjective, but we were slightly disappointed – in hindsight, we would have gone for the a la carte option, as the significantly more expensive tasting menu we had contained - to our taste – nothing standout vs other French restaurants we’ve been to.

Town of Cancale is 8 mins drive away, or a beautiful rugged walk round the coast. We liked it, as I imagine would anyone who’s into good value mussels and oysters, which it’s famous for.

Overall a very pleasant experience in a beautiful and peaceful spot, which we would recommend.

“Cute & homy Relais & Chateaux with seaview & vision...but lacking hands-on oversight”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2011

Even though the staff is not always delivering at the level of service where this Relais & Chateaux should be, they are trying their best-already an accomplishment for a French based hospitality business. The house is nice with great location, we had probably the best room with 180 degrees panorama on the Mont St Michel bay.The restaurant is a must- try although a bit overpriced, even considering the quality of his creations and the 3 Michelin star-try the Grignotage degustation rather than the full meal that's overkill. It seems that the owner & chef Rollinger is too important or too busy to show up in the dining room or in the hotel...which even the Ducasse, Ramsay or Boulud still manage to do across their global business empire. For that matter, it seems that all in all, Chateau Richeux has a unique potential but is definitvely lacking a hands-on management, attention to every detail in execution that makes a world class insitution or simply turn an exceptional craft into a sustainable success story...

“Perfect”

Back to France with a visit to Mont Saint Michel. We wanted to stay here in Cancale because of Chef Roellinger's cuisine. Our stay is really perfect. Very nice location. Roellinger's spices are a real experience. The accomodation is perfect. Service with high standards.

Cancale at this period of the year is very romantic. By the way it is the best period for oysters!!!
