I was really glad I found this place through browsing Trip Advisor. I went to Sarlat for the atmosphere of a medieval small town and this lodging perfectly complemented this. The house itself oozes period ambience and its location in the heart of the historic old town is perfect. The first two nights I was there, I had an upstairs room with a balcony that looked out, past stone walls of ancient mansions, on the central square. I couldn't keep it the next two nights as it had been previously reserved but I moved downstairs to a room that looked out on the garden. It was a cosy retreat after tramping about town or excursions to the surrounding quaint villages.

The owner Pierre Henri was a most kind and accomodating host with his information about the area and restaurant referrals. The breakfast was fine and a wonderful opportunity to meet other travellers and exchange travel tips. (The only very slight caveat was that you couldn't have it before 8:15am which was a bit of a problem if you had planned on an early start.)

We stayed at the Maison du Notaire Royal for three nights in May. Our large room had a balcony overlooking the historical square. The owners Pierre-Henri and his wife were helpful, the price was reasonable, and the home is historical--three things we loved about it. We definitely recommend this for people who are visiting Sarlat and the Dordogne.

Pierre-Henri went above and beyond to ensure our trip to Sarlat and the surrounding areas was the best it could be. He offered advice on where to go, recommendations on where to dine and what to see and wonderful directions. He also has a room full of guide books in various languages as well as maps for his guests to use during their stay. He explained the history of his house and couldn't be more welcoming. The double room we stayed in was huge. It included a large queen-size bed, dresser, large table and chairs and private wc with shower. The breakfast was 6 euro per person and included as much coffee as you like, croissants and bread. Good, but not worth the price as we prefer to grab a croissant and cafe' creme on the run. We had a lot of keys to deal with as you enter through a gated courtyard, then into the main house using a key and another to your room. Much better than staying at a hotel.

Tucked away amongst the cobbled streets of Sarlat is this wonderful bed and breakfast run by Pierre-Henri and Dianne Toulemon. We stayed a week here and had a wonderful time. The upstairs rooms are obviously the best and if booking see if you can get the room with a balcony - the downstairs room is a bit dark but the Toulemon's also have other accommodation available elsewhere in Sarlat. The market square is a mere 20 metres away down one of the many cobbled streets. A traditional French breakfast is available. I would rate the upstairs room with the balcony as one of the best places we stayed in while in France....and our hosts helpfulness and local knowledge invaluable...stay here and truly enjoy the magical ancient town of Sarlat.
