“Beautiful room, great location and friendly host”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011

My boyfriend and I stayed here for three nights the other week and had a great time. Our room was HUGE and our bed was very comfortable. The rooms were beautifully done out and much larger than anything else we had had in Europe (which counts when you have a large suitcase!) The Bathrooms were newish and in perfect order too. Breakfast was simple: coffee/tea with baguette/croissant and jam, but it was great that Pierre- Henri served it until 10am.

This place should really be listed under B&B, I did had to search quite a bit to find it, and I could not work out why it was under "other" in tripadvisor. It made me think it might be a bit dodgy - how wrong I was. The house is just gorgeous and backs onto the main square so we could see the saturday market from the breakfast room. We did not have a car as most people do when they go there, so we asked Pierre-Henri to book us a taxi to the train station for our 7am train. He could not find an available one and so took us himself at 6:30am!

This is a simple place that would be great for couples or families, there is plenty of information available there from Pierre-Henri and the many brochures and books he has. It is simple but just brilliant value.

“What a wonderful stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

This is really a bed a breakfast type place in the heart of Sarlat. The house is historical. Our room was HUGE and had a modern bathroom. The breakfast was the usual French breakfast of bread, juice and coffee.

The greatest thing about this place is the host - Henri Pierre. He is so warm and helpful that he made our stay wonderful. We started with a tour of the house and an explanation of the history. He made sure we had maps of the area along with descriptions of road trips to take. His tips included things like be sure to take this detour to see this 12th century abbey. It was so incredibly useful and far better than the guidebooks.

Sarlat is a charming city and a good place to use as a center for touring the Perigord Noir. The town itself is charming and within reasonable distances there are cro magnon caves, old abbeys and churches, fortresses, chateaus and lovely scenary.

One slight thing worth mentioning is that you are treated like you are at home - your bed is not made each morning. Not a big deal for us but it did take us by surprise. I would still stay here over again. We loved this place.

“Great location, great history, great place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2011

We recently traveled to France for a 10-day trip across the country. We started in Paris, and spent the following two nights in Sarlat. Our train arrived in nearby Souillac too late to catch the shuttle bus that connects to Sarlat. After a very expensive cab ride, we arrived in Sarlat and had no trouble finding the maison. The owner, Pierre-Henri, welcomed us through the main door and provided a very nice abbreviated history of the maison. My French is fair, but Pierre-Henri spoke perfect English and was kind enough to accomodate my wife and I. The maison had a great rustic/historic charm and the spatious room was very comfortable. The price of the room was very affordable and the maison was located right in the heart of the medievel town center. Pierre-Henri recommended a great place to have dinner and provided a very nice petit-dejeuner. I definitely recommend this hotel, and I will stay here again on my next trip to Paris. Thanks, Pierre-Henri.

“Enchanting, Historical, Friendly - Top Marks!‎”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2010

We recently stayed at la Maison du Notaire Royal in the heart of Sarlat for three days. Diane and Pierre-Henri were perfect hosts, lending advice when asked, and providing information on the incredible history of the home. Our room was huge, comfortable, and classy. It was easily my favorite place to stay of our multi-city Italy/France vacation. It feels much more like a home than a hotel (which, of course, it is!).

The location could not have been better and I couldn't give a higher recommendation.

As a side note... my wife lost her jacket on our vacation and remembered too late that she must have left it here. Sure enough, after an e-mail, they had found her jacket. They sent the jacket to us before receiving any compensation, just asking that we send them the money for the shipping after we received the jacket.

“location can't be beat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2010

I was really glad I found this place through browsing Trip Advisor. I went to Sarlat for the atmosphere of a medieval small town and this lodging perfectly complemented this. The house itself oozes period ambience and its location in the heart of the historic old town is perfect. The first two nights I was there, I had an upstairs room with a balcony that looked out, past stone walls of ancient mansions, on the central square. I couldn't keep it the next two nights as it had been previously reserved but I moved downstairs to a room that looked out on the garden. It was a cosy retreat after tramping about town or excursions to the surrounding quaint villages.

The owner Pierre Henri was a most kind and accomodating host with his information about the area and restaurant referrals. The breakfast was fine and a wonderful opportunity to meet other travellers and exchange travel tips. (The only very slight caveat was that you couldn't have it before 8:15am which was a bit of a problem if you had planned on an early start.)
