“No more hotels for us!”

Our first experience in a French B&B. Why have we always stayed in hotels when there are B&Bs like this? Knowledgable and friendly hosts added so much to our 4 day stay. Terri and Roy seem to be living the French dream in a wonderful historic town and are happy to share their insights with their guests. Nothing was too much trouble for them.

Our room overlooked the sunny courtyard and gave a truly unique view of the medieval tower.
Breakfast in the Salon was an excellent continental version with fresh fruit, cereals and fresh pastries. We were a little disappointed it was not quite warm enough for the courtyard breakfast but it was still a pleasure to dine in their atmospheric breakfast room overlooking the Cathedral.
If you are coming to Sarlat, and you must, why would you want to stay anywhere else?

“What a find!”

We stayed for 5 nights in November and had a wonderful time in Sarlat. The hotel is up a quaint lane from the town square and is close to everything the town has to offer. Terri and Roy were very friendly and welcomed us into their home like we were old friends. Nothing was too much trouble for them. We stayed in the courtyard room which we were glad to have picked - it was a lovely room with its own entrance and tea and coffee making facilities. It was spotlessly clean and the linens smelt wonderful. The Saturday market was a feast for the senses - well worth a look at. We bought a few goodies for a picnic in nearby Beynac and asked Terri if we could borrow a can opener for a tin of fois gras and 5 minutes later she had packed us a lovely basket complete with glasses, rug, tablecloth, plates and napkins. We were delighted with this kind gesture. While November was quiet in Sarlat we still found plently to do and loved being the only people in some places that are very crowded in summer. Our days were filled exploring the region - you will need a hire car - and the evenings were spent in the town. A short stroll down the lane and we were in the town square for drinks and dinner and only a few minutes to laugh our way back to our delightful room. We loved our stay in Sarlat and hope to make the long journey from Australia again. Thankyou Roy and Terri. Nevil and Michelle Hunter.

Room Tip: The courtyard room is wonderful and has its own entrance. Was great to be able to make a cup of tea...

“An idyllic home from home”

A perfect place in a beautiful location, I first came across La Lanterne while looking for somewhere for my parents to stay last year (we were camping). They loved it and having seen the place and met Terri I decided to return myself this year to experience it myself. The charm of the property itself is wonderful and Terri and Roy have done an amazing job in providing comfort and style while maintaining the character of this typically quirky old building. This is matched by the warmth of the welcome, with Terri always happy to share a glass and experiences with her guests, which is a wonderfully international and friendly affair. I'll be back!

This is a lovely B&B with welcoming hosts in a fantastic location. Would highly recommend staying with them. The standard of the accommodation is top quality, and in a great spot for exploring the surrounding area. As a solo traveller I felt welcome....It was lovely to have Terri & Roy to chat to & to offer advice on places to visit & restaurants.

“Very awkward experience”

We stayed 3 nights at La Lanterne and were disappointed with our experience. We had high expectations after reading positive reviews but from the time we stepped through the door to our departure we felt very uncomfortable in this B&B.
Towards the end of our stay we were told that 'this is not your house' - we were made to feel uncomfortable about coming and going from the B&B during the day, sitting in the courtyard, drinking our own beers as well as asking for advice. My husband was sick in bed for a part of the stay and there was a problem with him having food in the room. This was after coming from a B&B in Italy where our B&B hosts brought home-cooked pizza to our room after noticing that we had not been out for dinner. In hindsight we would have much preferred to have struggled with a language barrier and stayed with French hosts than to have stayed with these precious whinging poms. On a positive note - Sarlat is gorgeous!

Terri Bowen, Owner at La Lanterne, responded to this review

Not convinced that this review deserves a response as it says more about the attitude of the reviewer than it does about La Lanterne. However I am confident that others will see through this for the personal attack with derogatory remarks it is, rather than a balanced and fair review.

From email enquiry to first arrival, it was pointed out politely that we are a Bed & Breakfast establishment not a Hostel and do not have hostel self-catering type facilities for guests to prepare their own food. Unfortunately this point seemed to have been missed consistently during your stay and we were put in an uncomfortable position on more than one occasion pointing out that you were using our private kitchen.

With regard to your accusation of forbidding you to eat pizza in your room, we stated we would prefer food, especially pizza, to be eaten in the dining room rather than in bed. But if your husband felt he was too ill we would provide, trays, plates and napkins – as this was being arranged your husband appeared and decided to eat in the dining room?

At no time did we intentionally make you feel uncomfortable but I realized when politely pointing out for a second time that you were once again using our kitchen, a private area of our home, your attitude changed, perhaps through your own embarrassment? Certainly drinking your own high alcohol beers in our courtyard was of no concern to us.

Our style of accommodation and service was obviously not what you required from your holiday accommodation as we are not a self-catering operation, and I can therefore only concede that the concept of a Bed & Breakfast, i.e. sharing a home in close proximity to the owners and other guests did not suit your character or personality.

Hopefully your quirky review will help other young people to understand the nature of a B&B in France. It may also help you and other travellers understand that it is not only guests who can sometimes feel uncomfortable as some guests can make owners feel very uncomfortable in their own homes.
