We arrived at the hotel at 4pm and were told to return at 5pm for check in. We found this somewhat inconvenient as we were unable to unpack and relax after a long journey and had to wander around outside the hotel premises killing time.

Given that it was me and my partner's two year anniversary I had requested a room with some sort of view to make it more special, given that the hotel fronts a golf course on one side and, according to the website at least, the ocean on the other. Reception could not have given us a worse located room if they tried. We were allocated a ground floor corner apartment with the parking lot on one side and the hotel's driveway on the other. The sliding doors opens up onto a dusty patch littered with cigarette stubs next to the road. The furniture was well worn and rickety, the curtains and bedding covers faded and old. The tiny TV had very poor reception and was not worth using. The phone didn't work. The main bedroom had a horrible smell. We closed the door to that room on arrival and never opened it again.

The evening we went to the hotel bar which was quite lively and the bar staff friendly. They helpfully ordered us a taxi when we decided to escape our room for a night in town. We were informed that breakfast is an additional charge and needs to be ordered the day before. Fair enough, so we booked it. When we arrived at breakfast there was no one around to seat us. We seated and helped ourselves. The breakfast lady then arrived and suggested that apartment 47 was not booked for breakfast. We ignored her, finished breakfast, and left.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone at the rates they charge. It is certainly not worthy of three stars. And stay clear of apartment 47.

booked into the Mer et Golf because of positive reviews but have to say it is the worst hotel I have stayed in whilst in Biarritz, room was poor, dirty, it was cleaned once in the week that we were there- on the last but one day! , we had to get our own towels and toilet rolls as we weren't given any! restaurant was filthy - hair and food all over the chairs. balcony was covered in bird poo, the room was not baby friendly at all - no cot was provided in spite of asking, no pillows or blankets were given for the sofa bed so 4 of us ended up sharing blankets.

Very dissapointing, if you are going to Biarritz stay in Chiberta instead a bit more pricey but well worth the extra

we stayed here in november for a couple of nights and would thoroughly recommend it. in spite of it being low season, there were quite a few guests. rooms were clean, bright and well equipped. the staff are pleasant and very friendly. you can pre-order bread and pastries for breakfast the night before, at very reasonable prices, or you can eat breakfast in the dining room. rooms overlook the golf course at the rear of the hotel, or the sea at the front.

right across the road from the hotel and down a steep hill you'll find a lovely clean, sandy beach which wasn't busy when we were there in spite of the weather being great!

it's a bit of a trek to walk into the town of biarritz but the lighthouse, with it's spectacular views, is within 10 minutes walk. the residence is well placed for visiting bayonne and it's outskirts and is a very pretty drive.

also worth mentioning is the fact they have wifi. you have to surf in the dining room but it's free.

the downside for us was the bed - not quite a double!

Generally I am loath to stay anywhere that is not in the exact centre of the town we are visiting but in this case I am very pleased that we made an exception. We recently traveled to France to visit family who live in nearby (minutes away) Biarritz, and my brother in-law (a local) recommended these lodgings. The Mer at Golf is a couple of blocks of serviced apartments and for a family is a very good selection. The tariff of 360 euros for the week for a two bedroom apartment (of around 65 square meters) represented good value, the apartment was impeccably clean and well appointed. I would unreservedly recommend these lodgings to anyone visiting the area for a few days or more, certainly I would select it over a lot of the run down pubs in the centre of Biarritz.
