“Great room, bad managers”

We stayed for three nights in this small hotel just a few minutes' walk from the charming town of Eguisheim. Our family suite, with two bedrooms and one bathroom, was spacious and clean, with plenty of clothes storage. It was very quiet at night even with the windows open. It could have been perfect, but for the rather Basil and Sybil Fawlty-ish behavior of the owners. We had enquired before booking about availability of internet and were told there was access. But when we arrived, the manager told us we could use his PC in his reception area at 'designated times'. He told us none of the hotels in the area had internet. So we hung around in our room and I went down to the reception area at the 'designated time' but Madame was on the phone (chatting with a friend) and she waved me away, clearly annoyed that I was there. We gave up on the idea and walked into town, immediately passing a cafe advertising free wifi. Then past several hotels also offering free wifi. I wish our hotel manager had just told us the truth - that there was plenty of internet access everywhere, just not at his hotel. The owners also had a yappy little dog that barked through the fence at every guest as they came and went, which was irritating. The lock on our door was broken, which meant we had to slam the door to close it - and Madame commented one morning that we should try to close it more quietly. It's too bad. The location and the room were really excellent but the owners' attitude needs a bit of an overhaul. If you just stay there, and don't have much interacation with the owners, it's still a good choice.

“Rudest Hotelier in Eguisheim!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2008

I stayed here on 10th September to break my journey from Italy to England. The owner was extremely rude from beginning to end and even the most polite query was met with a rude answer. Instructions about not leaving key in bedroom etc bordered on the comic, " You will take your key every time. You will not be able to gain entry to the hotel without a key as there is no night porter". "Your breakfast will be charged to your bill [if you request it now] and it will be charged even if you do not eat it"
This is all useful information of course, but delivered in such a despotic manner, it was off-putting. My enquiry about the possibility of secure parking was met with a similarly brusque response, " We say we have private car park; we do not say it is inside"
The owner attempted to elicit some kind of sympathy by complaining that she has to work from early morning until late at night. No such sympathy was forthcoming from a now very disgruntled guest!
The dreary breakfast at 11 euro extra was appallingly poor value for money in a village where the standard is generally so very high.
Eguisheim is an enchanting village and I stay there twice a year ( usually at Hostellerie du Pape but it was full) and I have never before encountered such lack of hospitality. No wonder that it was the only place that had rooms available.
I have no idea why this is classed as an hotel. It's just a very dull and unfriendly B&B with a swimming pool.
I strongly recommend Eguisheim for its beauty but strongly advise that you find someplace else to stay!

we contacted the hotel directly and after that we sent them a fax including my credit card nunber. when we arrived at the hotel and entered the room, we checked the beds and found them in a very poor condition, unusually soft and not suitable for a three star hotel,at a rate of 115 euro/night. we called the hotel owner-mrs. karin lichtle. we explained her that we are back sensitive and we need regularly firm beds. we asked her to change us the room or to put a rack under the mattress. she was very uncooperative, told us that all her beds are alike, she is not prepared with a rack and we can leave the hotel. in any case she will charge us the full pay for three nights. we stayed for a night, but the next morning we had very stiff backs, had the second diccussion with mrs.lichtle with the same results an left the hotel. mrs lichtle charge the full stay on my credit card. by the way, in half an hour we found another room at "hostellerie des papes" in eguisheim, with decent beds and stayed for two nights.

“Friendly and high quality.”

We used the hotel as a stopover on our way back to the UK from Italy. We had a very warm welcome. We arrived in the evening and although the hotel does not do dinner, they recommended a restaurant and made reservations for us, (very useful as some were full and others closed on a Wednesday).

We were very impressed with the family suite we had (2 bedrooms and shared bathroom). It was a good size and the bathroom was very nice. The rooms were furnished to a high standard and clearly a lot of thought had gone into to making them attractive.

The hotel has an indoor pool which we didn't use but looked good. Breakfast was very nice. Hotels seem to charge seperately for breakfast in the area and although competitive, it seemed quite expensive.

Our room had nice views over the vineyards and it was a few minutes walk into Eguisheim. This was quiet with beautiful old streets.

Would recommend this hotel

“Nice, quiet Hotel ...just outside Eguisheim”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 June 2008

Hotel Saint Hubert is located in the vineyards, a 5 minute walk from Equisheim. We were in a triple room, which afforded plenty of space for the three of us. Washroom was modern, spacious and clean. I would not say that the hotel offered a great deal of charm. But it is clean and quiet with all the modern conveniences. When I say quiet, I mean it. We were the only guests in the hotel for 2 of our 3 nights there. You could hear a pin drop. The hotel had an indoor swimming pool which looked nice. Unfortunately, we never got to try it out since we were out touring all day and the pool was not open late. If I had anything to complain about, it would be the limited pool hours. But we didn't go to Alsace for the swimming. We did not have the breakfast in the hotel; so no comment there. The proprietress was very friendly and helpful with touring and restaurant recommendations. And she spoke excellent English.Equisheim is a beautiful little town. Cobblestones, half-timber buildings, flowboxes. Great for evening strolls. Lots of good hiking in the area with small laneways through the vineyards and, if you are energetic, you can climb up to the ruins in the hills behind Equisheim. All in all, a good base for exploring Colmar and the region.
