“Old fashionedly gorgeous luxury with one of the loveliest beaches anywhere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2010

We stayed here at the end of our little tour of luxury hotels in the area (previously experienced the farcically terrible hotel manager at Casa del Mar, unpretentious beach front pleasure at Pinarello and the special cliff top Capu Bianco) - and this is the best!

An old fashionedly stylish beautiful hotel - the design is earthy and natural- just right in fact..the kind of cozy luxury that I love. The room was not hugh but beautiful, with a lovely little terrace and all comforts of course.

The restaurant is excellent, dining al fresco by candlelight under the ancient trees is special and very romantic.. The spa is wonderful and memorable - I loved the under water music in the beautiful indoor pool - Puccini underwater was unexpected!

But the best about this hotel is the really gorgeous beach front - the intimate and wooded grounds meandering to a very lovely beachfront bar with the most lovely sandy beach below that we've been to...

This luxury comes at a very steep price - for special occasions I'd say - and memorable

“A Unique place in Europe...”

Corsica is unique spot to go if you like wild landscape, beaches and Mediteranean atmosphere. It's one of the only plasce where the population have done its best to keep it as closed as possible from what it was 15y or 20y ago...between amazing white sand beaches and great wild mountains...
Accomodation has not been always easy to find in an upper category but if you want to have all benefits of great hotel, great service and amzing location...there is only one place to go....Grand Hotel de La Cala Rossa...
There is not so many hotels of that standing with such a feeling of being home...all employees are nice and very dedicated to make you feel like a member of the family.
The beach is not so big but so quiet and peacefull, veru good bar service, food at the beach restaurant is really good with a lot of choices for children.
Breakfast was one of my favourite moment..lot of choices and again so peaceful, even if restaurant is full, you don't feel it at all..it looks like most of clients are here for this feeling of resting in a very quiet environment...very loud clients are not so apreciate but the crowd of clients which most of them are used to come every year at the same period...
The dinner for me is the only part to improve where I found sometimes the menu to "elaborate" for holidays but quality of the food make you forget this details very quickly
The all team of the hotel is really helping you to make your journey the easisest as possible, booking some boat day at the best rate and giving the best advice about where to go..they have been very helpfull for taking care of booking for the nightlife (via notte)...
If you are abig fan of Spa and massage you have to try the one of the Cala Rossa..massage were amazing...
I would like to thank you the Canarelli family to do their best to try to keep that classy, elegant spirit that it's so difficult to find anymore in places like south if france, sardinia and even italy..

“Horrible experience!!!!”

We booked into the Cala Rossa for a week but ended up leaving after 2 hours after a horrendous run in with the owner of the hotel.

When we complained about the lack of service at lunch we were confronted by a hysterical old man, who turned out to be the owner, who told us that "we were staying at his HOUSE and that if we didn't like it, we could go and stay somewhere else!" The man was shaking like a leaf and the situation was so awful we felt we had no choice but to leave.

The manager was very apologetic and explained this was not the first time he had reacted like this to a guest but under the circumstances we felt we had no choice but to go. At 1000 euros a night per room with 2 rooms booked you could be forgiven for thinking that the customer should come first. The idea that we were staying in someones house was so ludicrous that now we have recovered, it will be a story to be told in the family for years to come.

I was nervous about booking this hotel based on the negative reviews but thought that maybe there was some sour grapes in there due to price. From what I saw i think I did well to leave and having talked briefly to another French family who were checking out when we were, they said that the only reason that they had stayed the full week was because the hotel takes a non refundable 50% deposit!!!!!

Good luck - needless to say we will never be going back!

“Think very carefully before you book this hotel.”

We arrived at the hotel with high expectation having made it a policy to stay at Relais Chateaux hotels whenever possible. At almost 1000 euros a night we expected this to be the pinnacle of what the brand could offer as it is far more expensive than most.

The truth about this hotel is almost hard to believe. The gardens are beautiful and the water is warm but apart from that the rest would struggle to make a 4* hotel in any other setting - the audacity of what they charge is actualy quite breathtaking.

The reception has an almost youth hostel type feel to it (really, I know you think the owner must has slept with my wife but I am being serious) and you could easily miss the entrance altogether as there is no sense of focus to the building at all. Some would try and pass this off as "Corsican Charm" but in my book its just plainly not good enough.

The rooms are 4 star at best and are old and tired - we had a small patio outside our room and there were actually weeds growing up thrpough the stones. I am not talking about a rogue weed thatr sprung up overnight before being ripped up by some observant gardener, I am talking about OVERGROWN!

The service, if you are English speaking and not French, borders on commically bad and disinterested. The owner of the hotel swans around the place like the Maharaja and if you happen to be in his inner clique then you will find yourself pampered beyond belief. If you hapen to be a guest who has no connection with him then good luck and on our last day we actually heard him confront another English family at lunch over some comments they had made about the service. His response was, and I am not joking, "This is my hotel and I give the orders here - if you dont like it, go and stay somewhere else!" The family in question had a young baby with them and ended up leaving the hotel immediately and we were glad that we were leaving too.

The only thing worth recommneding is the food - my compliments to the chef who is fantastic and provides an incredible culinary experience. For the price quite frankly he has to but credit where credit is due, he chrages and he delivers.

Honestly, I canot believe what you pay for a 1 week stay here - I will feel sore about this for the rest of my days. When you get to this "level" of hotel then the only thing that matters is service and product - the prices bear no relevance to anything real world and if you cant deliver the former two things, you cannot expect the latter. Each to their own but I will never stay here again!

“Just too expensive for what it is”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2009

I ate dinner at this hotel but was staying nearby (so cannot judge the rooms).

Everything about this hotel - for me - is clouded by the fact that it is just so very very expensive. About as expensive as anywhere can be - anywhere. €1000 for a basic room, €50 for a starter in the restaurant etc etc. It's a perfectly pleasant place - upper/mid-standard Relais and Chateau (of which it is part). But nothing is memorable or wow, and at these prices you should be getting something amazing. Instead, you find yourself thinking "why can't I get the attention of a waiter?", "why am I pouring my own water at dinner?".... Petty things which just signify the lack of impact which should be there for these prices. I have been to plenty of places in this price range and you say "it's expensive, of course, but...". Unfortunately, here there's no but.
