“Mixed Feelings - Better Avoided”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2008

We stayed at Hotel Le Maquis at peak season. We read tripavisor before making the booking. Unfortunately many points are true.

1/ Nice location, right by the sea

2/ Access to a private beach although there are some sharp rocks off the beach where several hotel guests injured themselves

3/ One of the few hotels with a tennis court in the area although the one of the Sofitel next doors is in much better condidition

4/ Avoid going to the restaurant: there are more intimiate and unique locations nearby where you can dine for less than Eur100 per person, which will be the minimum there

5/ the hotel is right in the middle of the flight path to Ajaccio airport with planes roaring by all day and until late in the evening

6/ Most staff friendly but intrusive service at the restaurant and judgement problems at the reception

Overall: you will leave the hotel with mixed feelings. It is not your charming boutique hotel and it's certainly not the Four Seasons.

“Hated it”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2008

We booked it for 3 nights and escaped after 1 night! I hated every second of the experience. The room was so ugly and tired that I even didn't dare to seat on the stained sofa. We asked to change room...It was still extremely old-fashioned. The bathroom was new but they kept the old fittings (lights, toilet roll holder)!!!
We ordered a tea at 4 p.m. and it felt like it was a surprise for the room service to bring tea at that time. The breakfast was extremely basic.
We decided against eating there because the whole decor was so.....terrible.
Then we went hunting for a new hotel and found the Sofitel which was the opposite:clean, amazing view, interesting design inside, beautiful pool.
Being French, I am ashamed that this hotel could be rated like this: 2 stars would be enough.
Don't even think to take your granny to the Maquis, she would feel better in her home.

“An expensive disappointment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2007

I had heard so many things good about this small and quaint hotel but what a disappointment. The hotel is in a lovely secluded cove with its own private garden and beach, great sunsets but staff did not go overboard.
Outrageously expensive for a room with a terrace and a complimentary bowl of fruit. The room was minimalist to say the least. In fact, a paint lift wouldn’t go a miss nor would tea and coffee facilities, some toilet freshener, nice soft towels and a clean bathtub without black mould in between the tiles.
The restaurant has a great view overlooking the bay but is over priced for a vegetarian and the menu lacks imagination – pasta, omelet, salad.
Sorry, but not be be repeated.

“Nice but could be better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 July 2006

I would very much agree with the previous review. This is a lovely charming hotel-very romantic and very peaceful. It has an awful lot going for it-location,intimacy,charming staff, great food, proximity to Ajaccio. But it could be so much better if the owner invested in some much needed room refurbishments. All of the rooms are tired and outdated and some-on the top floor-are just awful.I would recommend that you ask for 301,401 or 402.They are OK and have good sea-views.The problem is that you really should not be charging the prices of this hotel if you are not coming up with the goods---yes there are lots of great things about the hotel that make up for the tired rooms but not at these prices!!!But the hotel is busy so they are getting away with it!!! Breakfasts are not great and you even get charged for extra cups of coffee!I would agree that at breakfast the hotel is bordering on extortion!it's a shame because this is such a gem of a hotel and really could be perfect.I would recommend the hotel but not if you are looking for value for money.

“This Hotel Could Be Great...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2006

...but it's currently only above average. Let me begin with the positives.
1) The dinner is absolutely fantastic - both the food and the service. We ended up eating dinner at the hotel for four out of our five nights for reasons I'll get into later, and we were extrememly satisfied. We chose the multi-course menus, and I would highly recommend that you do the same if you decide to stay at this hotel.
2) The setting is superb. The hotel is tucked away in a little bay that gives it a feeling of privacy and tranquility. The view looking out at the sea is very nice, and the private beach (although rocky...so bring beach footwear) is also very well maintained.
3) Housekeeping was excellent. Our room was thoroughly cleaned twice per day, and toiletries were kept well-stocked. The laundry/pressing service was very good and quick.
4) Room service was very fast. However, I must point out that my French is horrible and I did have to call the front desk to have an English speaking person call room service for me to place an order because the person I had just spoken to in room service could not speak any English.
5) There's a nice boat about a thirty minute walk from the hotel that will take you to Ajaccio, Sanguinaire Island, and other places around Ajaccio. The round-trip fare to Ajaccio is 8 Euros as opposed to 90 Euros for a taxi.

Now, the negatives:
1. The hotel is quite isolated. I would HIGHLY recommend that you rent a car while staying at this hotel. The round-trip taxi fare to Ajaccio (20 minutes away) is 90 Euros (over $100 U.S.). That's why we ended up eating at the hotel every night after the first night - I just didn't feel like adding 90 Euros to the dinner bill every night to eat in Ajaccio when the dinner at the hotel was only 65 Euros per person. Also, there is nothing to do right around the hotel. The boat to Ajaccio and a grocery store are about a thirty minute walk from the hotel.
2. The concierge/front desk staff were fairly uninformed. We asked about renting a car with automatic transmission. They said they would check into it because most rental cars have a stick shift. The next day, I had to follow up with the concierge and I was told that nothing was available. Then, the day before I left I was asked by the concierge..."Did YOU manage to find a rental car?" Then, a car was suddenly located. Of course, the day before we were leaving. We asked about a guided tour at one point and we never received a follow-up. When we asked about the boat, we were given the incorrect departure time (...good thing we happend to arrive forty minutes early at the boat dock), and misinformation about the tour. Put it this way - I got the feeling that they just didn't want you leaving the hotel.
3. English was not widely spoken. I wouldn't say that's a negative, but I just feel that people should know that it might be advisable to brush up on your French. We found this to be the case pretty much everywhere we went around Ajaccio too. The staff at the hotel's front desk spoke English well, the head waiters were OK, and after that...not much.
4. The swimming pool closes between noon and 3:00 p.m. That's because it's located right next to the restaurant's terrace. For whatever reason, the pool is open during breakfast, but it is closed during lunch. Just be warned that you'll have to either go swimming in the indoor pool or in the sea during lunch hours.
5. The restaurant service was inconsistent. As I said before, dinner was superb. Both the food and service were great. However, breakfast was a different story. We found the service slow, the food sometime came out cold, and it was just altogether unspectacular. Plus...breakfast is not included in the room price and orange juice was 7.50 Euros for a small glass. It absolutely drove me crazy. The prices of the other things were fairly resonable, but for some reason the hotel felt the need to turn to extortion when it came to the OJ. Why? I have no idea. I think the breakfast would have been much better if they had just had a little buffet with the cold things while offering people to order hot items a la carte.
6. Finally, our room was nice but a little uncomfortable. We had a junior suite with a gigantic patio, but we found that we either sat on chairs on the patio or we had to lie on the bed. The chairs in the room, while adding ambience to the room, were very uncomfortable and just not pleasant for sitting. Why can't a hotel just put some nice, comfortable chairs in a room?

Overall - I would say this hotel is above average but not great. We paid 420 Euros a night for our room, and the high season began the day after we checked out jacking the price of the room up to 590 Euros per night. I have to say that I was expecting greater things from this hotel, but I wasn't totally disappointed.
I would perhaps stay at Le Maquis again, but I would probably have a rental car OR only go there for no more than three nights (we stayed for five) with the idea of never leaving the hotel grounds and just having an "R & R" weekend.
