“Vintage Train Carriages”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2011

These were delightful! The interiors were themed and old movie posters and retro decorations made it an amazing experience. The views of distant hills and surrounding gum trees, bush land with Kangaroos and parrots was simply wonderful. The hosts, David and Jenny, fans of retro collections, beautiful objects, china and cute memorabilia were the best! Cooked Breakfast on the verandah (enclosed) with views of the hills is special, Lovely china, cute pots of real tea, retro memorabilia to gaze at in wonderment added to this unique experience. Coming back at the end of the day to a wood fire cheerily burning thanks to the thoughtfulness of host David was much appreciated. So many lovely touches add to a memorable experience.

“Unique, fun, good value - perfect!”

We really loved this place. While some people might chose it for the novelty factor it is also a really practical solution for accommodating young families. For the same price as a motel room in central Canberra we had 3 bedrooms and a sitting room, lots of outdoor space for the kids to run around plus kangaroos bounding past!

Adult train buffs will love this place for the attention to detail and history contained in these carriages which have kept many original features but added many creature comforts. The little kids loved it because it's a train and it was so fun! And mum and dad love it because we have our own space to relax after the kids are in bed. Perfect!

The 'red' carriage, XBS2162, consists of two apartments, each of which sleep 4. The one we stayed in had a fridge, microwave and electric kettle, so it would be possible to do some basic cooking. There is also a barbeque for the guests' use which is very handy. Although it is a converted train carriage it is actually pretty spacious. The 'master bedroom' in our apartment had a gas heater and a small sitting area with a DVD player and TV. The single bedroom also had a TV and the sunroom has the cooking equipment and another single bed. All rooms were nice and warm as there are plenty of heaters and electric blankets on the beds.

It's a bit off the beaten track, but follow the directions and you will get there no worries. It's only about a 9 minute drive to the Barton Hwy and from there about 15 to 20 minutes into Canberra. So it's a great base for exploring Canberra.

The hosts are friendly and cook a lovely breakfast.

Room Tip: If you'd like a bit more space, request the apartment in the red train with the microwave and th...

“Great bed and breakfast and super for families.”

Our family of four holidayed with another family of four for two nights in the adjoined train carriage bed and breakfast rooms. We had great afternoon walks down the back of the property where we were watched by some inquisitive kangaroos .There was plenty of room for both families and once we put the kids in bed we opened the adjoining door and relaxed together in one of the lounge rooms.

We enjoyed inexpensive meals at the restaurant of the Wood Duck Inn in Hall which was about a 10 minute drive away and featured speedy service and nice food. Breakfast at our accomodation was relaxed and hit the spot nicely and we used the gas grill to BBQ our lunch.

You are likely to have a car on a trip to Canberra so it makes sense to have a great accomodation experience a short drive away rather than a squeezy expensive one in the city itself. Our 3 year old loved sleeping in old train carriages and referred to the place as, "our tain home."

“A unique bed & breakfast experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 April 2011

Last Stop Ambledown Brook - "a unique bed and breakfast". That, was exactly what we got. Located approximately 22 kilometres away from Canberra City and surrounded by farms and vineyards - Last Stop is home to 3 vintage train carriages. These carriages have been converted into very unique and comfortable accommodations. Ours was carriage XBS2162 - a 1935 wood panelled carriage.

One of our first discoveries about the place upon our arrival (in the late afternoon) is that it gets really really dark. This can be a good or bad thing, depending on which perspective you choose to look at it from. For star gazers and anyone wanting to be close to nature, you'll find yourself right smack at home. But if you're used to the comforts of modern amenities, you'll find yourself rather lost.

For us, the experience of getting dinner wasn't all that great, since you'll pretty much be driving the only vehicle for miles before reaching the nearest town. The only other option other than driving out would be that you pack food before getting there, as this place does not come equipped with a place to cook.

Anyway, first light in the morning changed everything. We awoke to a wonderful and breath-taking scenery - which included a family of kangaroos hopping around in the wild. This was topped up with a great meal - B&B style, served by our very hospitable hosts, Jenny and David.

We arrived at Last Stop a little apprehensive due to it's slightly remote location, but left the place thoroughly blessed by the experience! We even told ourselves we'd come back again if possible, on our next road trip maybe. If you find yourself nearby Canberra, we highly recommend that you literally go out of the way to check this place out! You'll need to see this place for yourself to know what we're raving about.
