Horrible hotel and horrible people, above all at the spa within the hotel. Very bad experience for me and my family; would never go back there again and would definitely not recommend it to anyone, not even my enemies. I feel like laughing now at the name "Grand Hotel Salus"... Grand???

It is probably as good as you'll find in Viterbo. Actually, it is located outside of town - too far to walk. There are only 5 taxis in the town and they do not cruise the streets. Call the hotel to dispatch one if needed, especially from the train station (8 Euros one-way). The hotel is certainly not new and does not have a fitness center. However, the breakfast is OK and the swimming pool is excellent. They also have a thermal spa that we didn't use. All rooms have a balcony but with no furniture on them so they are useless. Plan to spend only a day in Viterbo as you can see it all. Very little interesting shopping (many stores close at odd hours and on odd days) but the old city has charming winding stone streets.

Based on some research I did on the internet, including Trip Advisor, we decided to take a short side trip to Viterbo from Rome. Basically, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, especially Americans. First, the train trip up there was the scariest experience I've ever had in all my world travels. We are almost mugged by a group of 5 teenagers who boarded the train at a stop by Viterbo. There was no one on the train to police their menancing behavior. Second, the Hotel Grand Salus is run down with poor quality beds. The air conditioning was off and we were told that they turn it off this time of year. The room was hot and muggy and overlooked the roof air conditioner. The staff was arrogant and unfriendly and unwilling to answer questions. The "spa" attendent was very rude and obviously didn't like Americans. The spa facilities were limited and the pool area was dirty. There is no reason for an American to venture into this depressed area and risk life and limb to soak in some thermal water, especially with the rude treatment by the staff and over-priced facilities. Stay away.
