“a gem of a hotel”

As soon as I arrived in Vieste (albeit after a 3 hour bus journey on twisty narrow roads) I knew instantly that I would love the place and I was proved right. Vieste actually exceeded my expectations - lovely, lovely wee town with great, clean beaches, numerous tasty and inexpensive restaurants and ice-cream parlours, a lovely laid back atmosphere and to top it all, a whole week of sunshine and no rain (which is truly something if you come from the west of Scotland).

Anyhow, regarding the hotel it's a 10 minute (max) walk to the hotel from the bus station down the main thoroughfare and it's relatively well signposted. Reception were friendly - took 5 mins to book in and then up to the room. The room itself was simple and plain but spotlessly clean with big bath towels, a range of smellies, tv and fridge. However, the biggest selling point was the small balcony with an uninterupted view out to sea - it was the best view I have ever had from a hotel room and all for only £70 a night (2 people, b&b). Note that I didn't expect to get a balcony as the pictures on the hotel's web page do not have balconies - must be a recent addition.

Breakfast is the usual continental style and I have no complaints. Didn't eat a meal at the hotel but a number of other guests (mostly Italians) were ordering their meals at breakfast which seems to indicate that lunch/dinner might be good.

The sunbathing platform is great with lovely views and you can easily go for a swim in the sea or in the hotel's small pool (too small for a lap swimmer - 6 strokes and you are at the other end).

All in all a great hotel and I would definitely recommend it and Vieste itself is fantastic if you are looking for a relaxing few days by the sea. Will be returning...

“Fantastic hotel!”

We can’t say enough good things about this hotel – the location, the room, and the service. First, unlike the other hotels in Vieste, which are either on a very wide, flat beach outside of town, or not on the beach at all, Hotel Seggio hugs the side of a cliff leading down to a pool and small private beach that are spectacular to behold. You won’t find another view this beautiful or such a nice, secluded location – although it is in a pedestrian-only zone in the middle of the historic district, so you can’t drive your car up to the hotel. (They do have a free lot and a pay garage about a 5-minute walk away.) Our room, which had two windows overlooking the pool and ocean, was large, modern and clean, with a refrigerator, air-conditioning, satellite TV and nice-sized bathroom. Breakfast was about average, but there are many nice restaurants and cafes nearby. But the most remarkable thing was the service. The morning we left, we asked for directions out of town, and the desk clerk assured us there was only one way out and we couldn’t miss it. Yet no sooner had we rounded the first two bends than we found, smack in front of us, an enormous parade of children blocking the one and only way out of town. We turned off our engine and waited patiently, wondering how long we would be stuck, when the concierge of the hotel drove up in a mini-van and told us to follow behind him, as he led us through a tour of the back alleys of Vieste, avoiding the main road and the school procession. When we were safely beyond the festivities, he waved us on with a smile. And he did all that when we had only stayed in the hotel for one night (85 euros), and had called ahead for reservations only a few hours in advance! If we had known how beautiful Hotel Seggio, Vieste, and the whole Gargano peninsula were, we would have stayed much longer.

“Fourth Visit in 5 Years”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2006

My wife and I just spent 8 nights in what has become a favourite retreat. We are greeted by the family as friends and we note that other guests seem to be equally well treated. We booked in February and requested the top floor large terrace room (actually twin and single rooms ensuite) and were delighted to get this. Views from the terrace are wonderful. We paid Euro 55 each for 4 nights then Euro 50 each for 4 nights full board. The hotel is open 1 April to 31 October each year so we were into Basso Stagione rates.

Bear in mind that Vieste gets some 400,000 visitors over a few weeks in July and August and that April(?), May, June & September are good times to visit. The town is quieter but still bustling at these times. We have a little place we have found to park near the hotel and indeed once out of the centre there are places to park if you look hard enough. A knowledge of Italian is most helpful as are the locals if you use it.

Clearly we may be a little biased but our stay was again a wonderful pleasure. Food, service - including the chambermaids efforts - are all well up to par and exceed those in many establishment with much higher rates in Puglia and Italy generally.

  • Liked — It is a favourite retreat for us
  • Disliked — rain on Monday
  • Tips/Secrets — Learn at least some Italian and use it.

“Nice building. Not nice owner, by any stretch.”

We stayed at the Seggio for two nights in May this year. We stayed in Vieste for 5 nights in total.
When we arrived at the Seggio we asked if they had rooms available - we knew we had no need to book so early in the season. The owner was behind the desk and he said yes, but refused to show us the rooms.
We should have walked out there and then.
Eventually he was persuaded to get someone to show us a room. Then we asked to see another, then another. We FINALLY ended up with a very nice room - but the fact that he was showing us the worst rooms available first made me think afterwards that this was not a very good business policy.
Anyway - we were tired and it was nice to have a hotel with a nice view over the sea (even if the view is a bit ruined by ugly concrete breakwaters just in front of the beach)
I went down to breakfast the next day and the first thing I saw was another guest walking with his breakfast to a lovely table looking out over the sea. The waiter snapped his fingers at him and pointed to a table on the opposite side of the (otherwise empty) room. It was like you might try and communcate with a dog.
We should have left then.
ANYWAY. Later that evening we met a lovely couple who ran a restaurant and asked about a friendly hotel and tehy poiunted us to teh Hotel Svevo, where we decided to move teh next day. I really felt uncomfortable staying in a hotel where they don't let the guests sit at the best tables in an empyty room.

>>>>The next day, about 3 hours after we have moved hotel, I suddenly realised that I had left about $150 of camera film in teh mini-bar at the Seggio !!! Some of it had been exposed and I was really worried, then realised that of course it would be safe.

So we went back to the Hotel Seggio and found the owner again behind the desk, Full of insincere smarmy smiles.

I managed to express that I had left a lot of very important film in the minibar and he said that
1) nothing had been found
2) the maid must have thrown it away
3) someone else was in the room so it was impossible to check
4) we shoudl come back the next morning when teh maid was here again and we shoudl ask her and that if she did not know where it was then we could call the Police.

We were both stunned at this and basically just refused to leave until he came up with a better solution than this. It was impossible I said that anyone would throw away what was obviously NOT rubbish.

After just refusing to move for 25 minutes he eventually shouted for a waiter who went up to the room (there was no-one in it) and came back 5 minutes later, laden down with my film. Evidently the room had not even been cleaned since we were there or the mini-bar would have been checked/restocked.

SO my view on this hotel is that, yes, it looks great on the photos but the pool is actually pretty crap and the beach only gets sun in the morning. There are nicer places to stay in Vieste (The Svevo was v friendly and a v short walk in to the old town (100 yards?) and with lots of free parking.

But mainly the man who owns it was one of the most needlessly unpleasant people I have ever come across running a hotel and I would rather give my money to nicer people.

“Best value hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2004

I spent many weeks looking for a recommended hotel somewhere on the Gargano coast and was impressed with the two reviews of the Hotel Seggio on Tripadvisor - thank you. We spent one week there in a sea view room and it cost 66 euros per person per night for full board - fantastic value. The room was smallish but with a good terrace and a lovely view of the sea. The food was excellent - four courses for both lunch and dinner. The staff spoke a tiny bit of English and were always cheerful and freindly and the other guests were nearly all Italian families. The pool and the shallow private bay in the centre of the old town were immaculately kept and a great bonus in the hot weather of July. We drove there and it is advisable to book a garage for 5 euros per day as parking in the town is difficult. We would recommend this hotel to anyone who loves Italian people, the food and culture.
