“a quality hotel... a quality place....”
After reading a newspaper article 3 years ago, we visited Viareggio as part of a 10 day tour around Italy, with 5 nights in Viareggio [ taking in Luca & Florence] train to Rome [ for 4 days] - and then train to Pisa [ 1 day] - and then to fly out.
On checking out the hotels - the Hotel Tirrenia stood out with all the comments of good value, care etc. Glad to say they are all true !!
We stayed in room 45 - which was accessed by stairs or lift. Good size room in bold colours, with fridge & safe. Small bathroom [ even smaller shower area] - but totally functional for our stay. No tea / coffee making facilities - and as my wife likes her tea day or night - she had brought her own supply of "Yorkshire tea". No problem the patron provided a kettle, milk etc - job done !!!
Breakfasts totally continental - but very varied in choice - still had bacon & scambled eggs etc. Self service as to what you may want - and no restrictions on choices made.Nice outside terraced area to enjoy a drink / smoke in a relaxed format
Given discount at the beach [ Bertoccelli] - nice clean soft sands, safe waters - and lovely back drop of the mountains.Indeed the hotel provided beach bag & towels without charge - a nice touch.
We visited [ Lucca & Florence], and on enquiring where we were going one day [ Lucca] we were immediately given a Lucca city map & details of train times.Nothing was too much trouble.
Plenty of places to eat, and the staff will recommend places for you if required - for example "Pasha's - turn right out of the hotel - then right again for about 50 yards [ diagonal to the pharmacy] on the corner offers very good pizzas and italian fare at reasonable prices.
The train station is about 10 / 15 minutes walk - a little to far with 2 suitcases - but ideal with light luggage / or just walking. Taxi from station to hotel & vice versa is 10 euros, and takes 5 minutes or so.
Train prices are very cheap, they are on time and tickets can be bought from the ticket office - or the ticket machines - which are simple to use and offer an English format.
Viareggio itself is a mixture - it has designer shops on the wide promenade - which also has a Friday market. The back streets are on a "grid system" and it is easy to find your way around . There is a nice large park area about 10 minutes walk from the hotel.
Traffic is pretty light - and many locals use bicycles.
All in all the resort offers a quality hotel and a quality palce.........
