“Excellent views, classy atmosphere, in the middle of nature”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2011

+ Situated right near the top of the mountain, close to Varese, easily reachable by car via a nice mountain road (at times passing through narrow ways between old buildings).

+ Hotel is in a rustic cabin right on the edge of the mountain, found in a small and chic village. One one side of the cabin you have an excellent view of the mountain slopes with rich forests and the Varese city far below, on the other side you have a small stoned piazza with other old buildings (a hotel, a church with tower and bell etc). The old, remote mountain village feeling is just great.

+ Nearby you have an observatory + park (on top of the nearby mountain; never got to see it but sounded quite interesting) and a heritage site of several chapels on the side of the mountain. And of course the city of Varese + lake Como at 50 KM.

+ The hotel is clean and the rooms are very big. The layout of the rooms (eg: bathroom on the 2nd floor of the room) is interesting and original. The decors are made with very good taste, are original and inspire luxury (some are a bit dated, but honestly this is part of the atmosphere). Good TV (mostly italian channels), big bathroom, good bed.

+ A big plus for the HUGE private terrace for each room with chairs and tables that offer the best view of the mountains and of Varese somewhere down. Sitting on the terrace feels like you are floating over the mountain and over everybody.

+ The wilderness and peacefulness of the area was the thing we enjoyed the most. The only things we could hear was the occasional sound of the church's bell and the screams of the owls at dusk (a thing we only heard in movies). We even saw foxes on the road, that's how wild the area is. We liked the area so much that we stayed an extra day.

+ Staff was very nice, waiting for us AFTER THE CLOSING HOUR FOR RECEPTION 11PM, giving us advice on what we can visit. I wrote it in bold so you notice there is a closing time :)

+ Excellent value for money.

We did not have breakfast or any meals in the hotel so we can advise on the quality or price.

All in all this is a hotel where we would come back anytime when we would want to relax in the middle of the nature. Just great!

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms facing the mountain slope with a terrace. I think most rooms are like this.

“Beautiful location”

Our first night in Italy was in Varese and this hotel is in the most beautiful location high up on the hill overlooking the lake and town. Giuseppe was a good host and our room was very clean and colourful.
It wasn't so hard to find if you head into Varese and then follow the signs to Sacre Monte which is way up the steep hill.
Dinner was quite nice and it wasn't nearly as expensive as I expected after seeing other reviews on here. We had a very peaceful sleep and a nice breakfast with fresh bread and jam and cheeses and coffee.
All in all a very pleasant stay and we would definitely stay again and recommend.

“No one was there!?”

A group of us friends were very excited to visit this hotel. The pictures look amazing and the reviews were decent. We made reservations for two nights. WARNING This hotel is very difficult to find at night. We arrived at the hotel at midnight EXHAUSTED after driving for hours trying to find it. When we arrived there was NO ONE there. No one answered the door or phone. We had to call the company that we booked through and they could not reach anyone either. We had to find another last minute hotel at 1am that nigh (which was much more expensive)t!! Luckily some locals were able to help us find something in the middle of the night. The next day, the owner of the hotel was called by Hotels.com and claimed that we did not show at all and that he waited until 1 am. He refused to give us a refund. We did not stay there. This was definitely the worst hotel experience I have ever had.

“Cheap Hotel but beware of the charges for the restaurant!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 May 2010

We stayed at this hotel on our way through to Tuscany. We were only there overnight and were greeted with warmth by the owner (i think). We did struggle to find the place as it is just outside Varese and is high in the mountains. Once you get there you dont really want to leave because of the hotels remote location. We got menus at dinner but the owner persuaded us to have the risotto and a bottle of Prosecco. This alone cost us 85 Euros and really wasnt very good. At breakfast we asked twice for some milk with our cereals but none came. We made do with pastries and a coffee. All in all for an overnight stay high up in the mountains in a clean hotel with on site free parking it is fine but think again about the restaurant - you would be better off driving somewhere else - even though this would be an extra effort.
