“Great Food & Customer Service at Hotel Angelini, Torbole”

We booked a last minute holiday through Topflight to Lake Garda, allocation upon arrival at Verona Airport - 14 nights stay for two adults.

After some confusion as to our allocation, we were allocated to the Angelini, in Torbole.

Torbole is a smaller, sportier and quieter resort than the nearby Riva del Garda, and northernmost on the lake. The scenery is spectacular - your first glimpse on the descent to the lake will take your breath away.

We were allocated a small room at the corner of the hotel; this meant a small angled balcony and no window. I am unsure what the interior of the other rooms are like, but ours was perhaps overdue some redecoration - on first arrival, it was slightly disheartening. There were fabulous mountain views all round, but the road beside our room was busy, and we also had an unattractive view of the back door of the kitchen below to the left; complete with bins etc. No air-conditioning and no window meant the room could be uncomfortably hot at night.

However, we overlooked this, as the purpose of our holiday was to tour and explore, so we tended to leave the hotel in the morning, not returning until night.

Our observation was that there was a good age range in terms of guests staying at the hotel, and only a few kids. It's a quiet hotel, and should suit more mature travellers and those with no children.

Cleanliness was good - rooms cleaned to a high standard every day, towels, linen and soap replaced regularly. The beds were also comfortable.

I agree with the previous reviewer that the food in the hotel was absolutely delicious - breakfast (served from 8-10) involved a choice from cereal, breads, cheeses, cold meats, crackers, biscuits/cakes, fresh fruit salad, croissants.... etc etc. At the breakfast table, they give you a slip to complete to specify your starter and main course choices (which vary from day-to-day) for the evening meal (served from 7.30-8.30) - all superb .... deliciously al dente pasta etc. Then there is then a standard choice of desserts. The house wine is not bad at all and pretty inexpensive at circa four euros for half a litre jug! The waitresses were extremely helpful and responsive.

Only one thing slightly spoiled our enjoyment in the hotel restaurant. A large group (25/30) German/Austrian tourists had booked the Angelina at the same time. There seemed to be some sort of christian/windsurfing angle to their trip, judging by bibles spotted at the dinner table, and sporting equipment spotted elsewhere .... but the problem lay in their insistence in standing up in the middle of the dining room each and every night in order to deliver prolonged talks/speeches - while other tourists, ourselves included, were trying to relax and enjoy our meals in peace. We felt this was extremely rude and think that the hotel ought to have been more proactive in preventing this annoyance to their other guests...... but we didn't bother complaining about it and so we will give the Angelini the benefit of the doubt on this - I am sure that these German/Austrian guests were the exception to the rule.

Customer service standards in the hotel were generally high - the staff did not fail to promptly follow through on any requests or enquiries.

We went on a number of excursions organised by our resort rep, these included day trips to Innsbruck (Austria); Venice; Lake Tour; Wine tasting (if you're a red wine lover, try the Marzemino :-)). Using public transport, we went to Malcesine and took the Monte Baldo Cable Car (don't leave for home without doing that...)
If you take a hire car, many other options will be open to you - we did this and also went to Roverto; Verona; Milan; and Maranello.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to others.

  • Liked — The location, the food
  • Disliked — No window in our room, tired decor.

“Lake Garda we love you!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2007

We booked a last minute holiday through Hays Travel to Lake Garda with Cosmos, allocation upon arrival (£677 for 7 night’s half board for 2 Adults). Apparently Cosmos always fly into Venice Airport for their various tours and cruises around this region. This meant a 3 1/2 hour coach ride to get to Torbole on the northern shores of Lake Garda where we were allocated to stay. We are usually very lucky with the hotels we get as we always book last minute deals. We booked this trip on the Saturday lunch time and flew out 0700 Sunday morning. We stayed in the Hotel Angelini which is 100 metres from the lake (20 minutes to walk) and a 20 minute walk to the village centre (shops, restaurants, bars etc.). This made it ideally situated. The hotel is family run and has a pool (cold!!!), fitness centre (did not see) and all rooms have a balcony. The rear of the hotel faces the Lake but you cannot see it because of the trees. The owner informed us he was going to chop them all down next year! He was grinning at the time of course! Our room was on the corner with views to mountains all around and the busy road alongside. The hotel has no air-conditioning so we often had to leave the balcony door open to keep cool. Unfortunately the road is so very noisy most of the time and it did tend to disturb us. This actually is the only criticism of our otherwise excellent holiday. It seems that if you want to be near the lake you will also have to be near the road but it is handy for the local bus service. Although there is a bus stop nearby you have to buy the tickets in a tobacconist. Rooms on the lakeside may be quieter because they are away from the road, I do not know.

The food in the hotel was delicious, Continental breakfast and 3 choices for evening meal, 4 courses including side salad. The food was very filling; we usually had to go for a walk after dinner because we were so full up! Nice local wine is a reasonable €12 in the hotel and €4 for the same bottle in the Spar shop in the village.

You will not find Hotel Angelini in the cosmos brochure.
They have just started using it for there last minute bookings but it is a lovely hotel and all the family and staff are very nice and helpful.
The Cosmos Rep. Jo was also excellent, she used to pop in on the way home.

Just past the village centre there is a ferry terminal where you can cross the lake to Riva, Limone and Malcesine which has a cable car to the top of a mountain. From the top of the mountain you can see the whole lake which is 40 miles long. Check the timetable for ferry departures and returns. Certain ferries would enable you to travel right down to the bottom of the lake stopping at every village en route but check the timetable to ensure you can get back. You may not get a long stay once there. I also saw a Hydrofoil which would be much faster but check times. Certainly a trip to Riva, Limone and Malcesine are well worth it. You can also walk to Riva in about 40 minutes (leisurely pace). It is a lovely walk highly recommended with lots of places to sit down and enjoy the views. We can highly recommend Lake Garda for a holiday there is so much to do, cycling, windsurfing, diving, boat hire and best of all chilling out with a glass of Italian wine enjoying the beautiful scenery.

There are optional trips available; we did a trip to the Dolomites where it snowed (in July!!) and a trip to Trento (lovely scenery en route) and the Grappa distillery both very enjoyable. It is also possible to go to Venice or Verona for the day or a coach and boat trip right round the lake. So anyone who has not been to Lake Garda, what are you waiting for, get on the next flight and enjoy yourselves!!! We’ll be going back again soon.

  • Liked — Lovely hotel, Delicious food, views all round and friendly staff
