“Welcome retreat”

Castello Di Poreta was the perfect stay for us. It came at the end of our first day on The Olive Tree Trail which goes from Spoleto to Assisi and the Castello is at the end the end of the first day's hike. The rooms were great, spotlessly clean with ensuite bathrooms, the food in the restaurant was beautiful and the view across the valley was fantastic, you look straight into the sunset from the restaurant. The room was reasonably priced(€75) the restaurant less so. I would stay and eat there again though. There is no fan or air con, but there are fly screens on the windows so for the hot night the window had to be opened wide.

“A bit strange and overpriced.”

This hotel was o.k. but nothing special and also overpriced.
It was very quiet, the only other people there seemed to appear out of the woodwork at dinner and then all talk together in a very middle class, hushed tone sort of way - there was no atmosphere. There also seemed to be no staff. When we first arrived we were shown our room and then just left. We weren't told about dinner or breakfast or anything! The room was nice - large and with a small shower room. It was very quiet apart from a local kennels...
The hotel is very much on its own - the road up is a little scary and once there for the evening you are stuck. The food was nice but... it is not made clear on the website that if you book half board you don't get any choice for your dinner. I had read reviews of the wonderful food so to pay 25 euros each (without drinks) but have no choice at all over what you are eating was bit much. We had a vegeatble pasta dish followed by pork and a salad and then a strawberry mouse - it was o.k. but I could have cooked it myself - this was actually the most expensive meal that we had in Italy and it was the one I liked the least.
I wouldn't go back and even my unfussy husband was not impressed - we paid 175 euros for one night, dinner and breakfast- not bad you might think but we only paid 40 euros more when we stayed at the Palazzo Ravizza in Siena and had a four course fantastic dinner at Taverna San Guiseppe.
Find somewhere else to stay.

“Beautiful and Quiet”

After visiting Spoleto for the day, we drove 15 min North to Poreta, a very small town overlooked by a ruined wall surrounding the hotel Castello di Poreta. We found ourselves the only guests in the hotel and only 1 of 2 couples in the restaurant (excellent, highly recommended). The hotel was very clean and obviously very quiet. The sunset from the patio overlooking the valley was perfect as we slowly sipped our Barollo(purchased earlier from an Enoteca in Montalcino). I highly recommend staying here provided you are okay with a relaxing evenings surrounded only by hillside and a nice slow meal. It hit the spot perfectly for us.
