“A Gem in Spoleto's center”

Small family run historic palazzo with incredible charm and with the best location possible. Parking free and well organized. Fabulous views from some rooms and from dining room. Excellent and rich breakfast with home cooked pastry. Superb service all around and great visiting advice offered. No request refused. Excellent security. One really feels at home here. Could not find any fault. There are more luxurious places with pools and spa's out of town but his is certainly by far your best choice in Spoleto's center.

Room Tip: Best room (we believe) is N° 8

“Delightful!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2010

After 4 hectic days in Rome, Spoleto and Palazzo Dragoni were like heaven. Do not expect pool, internet, room service, etc. Instead we had a delightful clean and spacious room and staff that was gracious and helpful in every way. The breakfast and the room in which it is served is a wonderful way to start the day. This is a true gem!

“Terrific experience and incredible views!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2010

We loved Palazzo Dragoni and the superb service provided by Roberto and Erminia Diotallevi.

The view from our room, nr. 8, was fantastic.

Signor Diotallevi was very helpful with advice on our itinerary, where to eat, where to find a great porchetta sandwich, etc.

All of the four dinner restaurants he recommended - Ristorante Tric Trac, Ristorante il Pentagramma, Trattoria la Torretta, and Ristorante il Panciolle were wonderful.

The only problem we had was getting there by car. Nonetheless, I'd recommend it to everyone. It would be great if the hotel's web site added a video on how to reach Palazzo Dragoni.

“Charming Palazzo in Spoleto under construction....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2010

We chose Spoleto as a base to visit other little hilltop towns in the last part of our Umbrian trip. Well, we were very disappointed with Spoleto since it is a mess...so many buildings under wraps, construction sights in main squares, many interesting sites not available to visit....we know that the hotel is under no obligation to let anyone know that so much construction is going on, but this put a damper on our stay. We gave up on going in and out of town with all the deviations and trucks...cranes above our heads. When we arrived at the Palazzo I could not believe the little space outside for our Panda (car) and after seeing the cars and trucks almost it hit it and practically hit my husband on the last step of the hotel, we decided to stay put and cut out stay short. Of course, it did not help that the weather was colder than normal and very misty/drizzily. The owner, Roberto. was very charming at all times and welcoming. We enjoyed the room with the canopy and like previous writers found it to be spacious and basically clean. The Palazzo does need some touchups with paint in certain areas but that's part of the charm. It's an old building, but I don't feel that the rooms are neglected and dirty like the previous reviewer recalled. We were the only guests besides one single man and they put the heat on for us (which did not occur in a more highly rated (stars) hotel. Also the owner's wife made us the most delicious omelets every day and was so accomodating with bringing us delicous cappucinos. The breakfast spread was varied with meats, cheeses, fruits, cakes and it was basically only us....WOW! The owner gave us recommendations to two terrific restaurants and he was spot on....We felt very weird being the only clients in those restaurants...not much business in Spoleto during the week, this time of year. Anyway, we realized that we had to cut out stay short by one day since the weather was not getting better and there was nothing more to see in Spoleto. When they are finished with the enormous renovations throughout the town and with the last escalator to help everybody get up to the old part, Spoleto will look like a gem...right now...visit for the day, stay overnight and then move on.....

“Served its purpose for Charm, Location & Views.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2010

After making countless trips to Italy, almost 2-3 times a year, and posting more than 350 reviews for Tripadvisor, I can safely say that I rarely post poor reviews for a Hotel where we have meticulously picked. Giving this ancient Palazzo a 3 stars out of a 5 does not mean that we have had a poor stay, in fact, it was a fine stay. Do read on ...

Let's be frank, Spoleto isn't one of the top Umbrian cities to visit ... with only probably 3 main sights to see (the Rocca, the Duomo and the Aqueduct). But strangely enough, there are many good and quite luxurious hotel to choose from. But after reading reviews and studying their respective locations, I had picked the Dragoni for its location (promixity to the 3 main sights), views and charm. In this regard, we cannot say we were disappointed as while exploring Spoleto, the other more luxurious hotels (and certainly, more expensive, too) which we had once considered were located in a somewhat less than ideal location as compared to the Dragoni.

Our chosen Junior suite room 10 was spacious, with a separated walk-in and sitting area (no separating doors, though). The room was charming, bright and offers great Umbrian views from 3 tall French doors. Bathroom was long and bright, quite spacious with a huge shower cubicle. From what we have read, this was the 2nd most popular room after room 8.

During the day, there was very slight grass cutting and construction noises from nearby buildings, but was dead quiet at night, so we slept well. Bed was a little sagged but comfy enough, TV has some English channels, Wifi was free and easy to use.

But why then the lower ratings? Well, you cannot help but feel that the whole Palazzo, be it the common areas or the room itself, is not very clean and not very well maintained. I would not say that it is in a very poor state, I would only say that the Palazzo had seen better days.

Whenever we are in Italy, I would race to stay in ancient Palazzos, loving their classical decor and ancient ambiance. No doubt you will get this here since the Palazzo was once restored to its former glory, however, you cannot help but to notice blown bulbs, cracked bathroom floor tiles, insufficient & old room lightings, wear and tear at some places.

Billed as a 4 star, we thought, it had felt more like a 3 star. There was no slippers in the room, so we had to walk on somewhat 'dirty carpets', there were very limited toiletries with wet tissues being there for ages and totally dried up, no spare blankets nor pillows in the closet etc.

And to make matters worse, the much touted Breakfast, though held in a charming enclosed Loggia area, was a real let down. Had read somewhere that the owners were former bakers and from past pictures on this website, I was telling my husband, ' get ready for some nice cakes & pastries'. Served from 8am the next morning, we only found a hard like rock bread (inedible to us) and a freshly, oh-so-fragrant Orange sponge cake. No pastires or other ready-made cakes were available to us ... utterly disappointing, to say the least.

The true redeeming factors of this Palazzo has to be Roberto, who is nice and helpful, albeit a little withdrawn maybe due to the language gap, and his ever smiling wife who serves breakfasts in the mornings. If not for the fact that Roberto still remembers that I had earlier during my booking, requested for a fan to be placed in the room, I would have given this Palazzo an even poorer rating.

Like I had said from the beginning, it was a fine stay. I would not discourage you to stay here if you are like us, going for its location, views and charm - you will almost certainly not be disappointed if you are going after these factors.

But you will be disappointed, if expecting bits of some 4 star luxury factor, then its a different story altogether. As a matter of fact, the Palazzo also never charges 4 star rates, we thought its rates are still quite reasonable for what it offers - location, views & charm.
