We caught a flight to Rome and drove up with a hired car. La Somma is situated on the top of a hill just south of Spoleto. The fact that it is out of the way is what gives it its individuality but nothing beats the thrill of horse-riding every morning before taking off on some sightseeing. The kids had a whale of a time with Christina and her sister as coaches. The Bevilacqua family was so welcoming and even invited us to join them for their Easter Sunday lunch, at a nominal price. My only recommendation is that the trip be made after May. We were unlucky in that we travelled over Easter, so found all adventure activities closed. Most disappointingly, we had received no replies from the Perugina factory to our queries by e-mail prior to the trip, and the Tourist Office did not advise that it would be closed over the vacation period. An adventure activity which the kids would have loved - climbing from one tree to the next, by the river - was practically impossible to find.... and when we finally arrived we found it closed. The kids were so put out. If these attractions promote their activities through their websites, then they should also ensure that they are updated regularly so that tourists can plan their days and not get disappointed time and again. I'd also suggest that Umbria's tourist office gets its act in order, and actively encourages such places of interest to open over Easter. Until then, I'd gladly spend my days at La Somma :)
