“Typical low cost ski accommodation”

We were not expecting much, and were not disappointed! The reception staff spoke good English and were polite and informative. There is a free underground garage. There is a bar and restaurant, shop and gym. In the evening there was some music/entertainment which we did not bother with. As there were 5 of us we opted for the accommodation that slept 6. The accommodation comprised of entrance hall with coat storage area. Bathroom with shower, toilet and bidet with good supply of towels. Leading from the hall was very small galley kitchen area with dishwasher, sink, storage cupboards and 4 ring electric hob. There was no microwave, oven , kettle or toaster, so it made self catering very difficult. Leading from this was a lounge/diner area with table and chairs for 6 and settee which could sleep 2. TV was only in Italian. Large balcony. The sleeping areas comprised of a good sized room with bunk beds for 2 and plenty of storage areas, and leading from this was a closed off room with a double bed, storage areas and view over balcony. Bedding is provided. The walls are very thin and there was a lot of noise from people above moving furniture, plus don't have room 6 which is just outside the lift! It was all very standard with little luxury and all a bit shabby. If it is somewhere where you just want to sleep and at other times you are skiing and then eating out in the evenings then it is just about bearable! The Palace Residence 2 is the furthest accomadation from the ski resort. It takes at least 20 minutes to walk to the start of the ski lifts, and although there was a bus service, we chose to drive each day and park in the large car park at the foot of the slopes, where the ski hire and shops are. Cost was 4 Euro a day. We hired our skis from 'Rent and Go' which is down some stairs next to where you buy the lift passes. You can hire a locker in the shop to store your boots and just outside this shop is a storage area for skis. If you say you are staying at the Palace Residence you can rent for free, with a 5 Euro deposit. There are lots of little coffee shops and bars in this area and a supermarket. The choice of dining in the evenings was a little disappointing, with little choice other than pizzas. Some are fairly small so would recommend booking as they don't seem to stay open late. We ate at 'Pinkys' a few times, which is in the shopping area about 10 minutes walk from the Palace. Overall it was a good holiday with flights into Turin with a transfer time of 1 hour 45 minutes. If however you want luxury don't stay at the Palace Residence!

“Cramped and tired”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2006

If you believe that the 2 bedroom apartments at Res Palace 2 sleeps 6 as advertised you will be in big trouble. There is one proper bedroom which is small but just about OK. You get to it by going through bedroom 2 which is about 3 metres square, has no windows or skylight, 2 bunks and a sort of rollaway bed underneath. Very squalid. Bedroom 3 doesn't exist, it is the living room sofa with no facilities or even a cupboard to put your clothes in.

You would be mad to book this apartment for 6 people. You might get away with it for a family with 2 young children but even then you will find it very tight for space, drab and basic with a tiny kitchenette and tired old poundshop-style equipment. Nothing at all in English on the TV. As previous review says, the view from upper floors is fantastic but it doesn't really compensate for the meaness of the size and fittings. As for the garage -suitable for bubblecars, nothing much bigger.

P.S. Sestriere seems to have thunder, lightening and heavy rain every day in the summer, we left after 3 days of the week we'd paid for. Perhaps that is why virtually everything is closed.

“Lacking in Charm ...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 March 2005

I would definitely ski Sestriere again, but I wouldn’t stay at the Palace I&II again. Beyond their spectacular view onto the mountain, the Palace itself is a plain, old, brown, functional, impersonal, massive, concrete complex of flats that could do with a facelift.

There were no surprises at the Palace. Everything was as the website had described it. Appliances etc seemed to work, but I wouldn’t expect them to last another year. The bedroom with the bunk bed has no windows, so it gets quite stuffy at night. Hotel location is at the top of the town, so the walk to centre and lifts is fairly long, but they do offer shuttle services and have ski storage at the base of the hill.

You’ll be satisfied if you are looking for a basic, plain place to lay your head. But if you are looking for a place with just a little energy or spice or with staff that can think/act just a little out of the box, I would look elsewhere.
