We have just returned from an early season late bargain at the Crystal Club Hotel Argento. The location is potentially good with lifts close by. However because of lack of snow we were somewahat isolated as the club is actually in Borgata which is exceptionally quiet. Sestriere is only accessable on skis(when the lifts are running)or by mini bus. The local taxi firm has ceased operating. Whilst Crystal operate a mini bus this is not at fixed times or very regular. The Argento is one of those places where your heart sinks as you walk thro' the door and it doesn't get much better. The staff were all very willing but frankly hadn't a clue. Dinner was frequently cold and served on cold plates, the first menu, presented as we checked in, was a scruffy handwritten affair complete with corrections. The food sounded great but was not properly cooked (e.g Bruchetta - two slices of cold uncooked white bread spread with chopped tomato and garlic) it was also not always of good quality. Conversely the white wine was served at room temperature even when we paid extra for a good bottle. Maintenance was generally poor with doors that could not be closed, hot water systems that didn't work and light bulbs needing replacement. Daily snow/weather information was 18 months out of date on the info board. My advice - even if you get a cheap deal (as we did) you can do much better- go to somewhere that is well run!
