We only stayed at Relais Villa Savarese by chance, but in picking it we struck gold.
It is a lovely, lovely big villa set in its own big, beautiful gardens. The house itself is a work of art, seemingly at one with the gardens surrounding it. The gardens make you feel like you are at one with nature, but they are well tended.
Our room was spacious and well appointed, with a nice big bed and an appreciated jacuzzi bath in the bathroom.
The lovely outdoor swimming pool, overlooked by lovely lemon trees is great to spend time in and around, letting time drift by.
But, like many places, it is the staff who make the difference. Angela and her team are quite amazing. They were always warm and friendly, very helpful and happy to chat. Behind the warmth, you could tell that the place was run very efficiently - everything was as it should be, everything on time. Angela makes you feel like you are welcome in her home rather than a customer renting a room. It's a subtle difference but it changes the experience from 'great hotel' to a 'wonderful escape'.
Angela's relais is about a 20 minute walk from the centre of Sorrento. The walk is for the most part pleasant enough although there are a couple of blind corners with narrow paths! Watch out for mopeds and speedy cars.
We had planned to stay in Sorrento, but as our holiday got closer, we realised we had left it late to book a hotel. We walked to Sorrento on a few occasions - and it is a very beautiful town - but it was very, very busy and we were glad to be a little away from the heaving crowds.
Sant Agnello is much quieter than Sorrento, but it had enough nice restaurants to keep us entertained for the week and the local produce really is very tasty.
I nearly forgot to mention the breakfasts at Villa Savarese.... yummy! Lots and lots of lovely sweet and savoury food and always a lovely cake or tart to tempt you.
We'd love to return to the area and we'd definitely stay here again.
