My Mum and I experienced a week at La Pergola, choosing it for the package price and reviews.
Starting with the good.....
The hotel staff are as welcoming and friendly as the previous reviews say they are. From the moment we arrived, the small hotel team knew who we were and catered to our needs and requests.
Breakfast was OK with reasonable choices. We went 'off menu' a couple of times in the evening and the hotel bent over backwards to ensure we were enjoying our 3 course evening meal. The fresh salad buffet was a welcome addition. Drinks prices were on par with the Sorrento bars. Raffaello the Head Waiter was especially attentive.
Our room was clean and comfortable, with a balcony overlooking the front. The decor was tired and dated, but it was an acceptable base where we could rest our heads at night. We did not poay the 50E charge for air conditioning, but the room was kept cool through the use of the louvred shutters. I believe the rooms were cooler at the front, so ask for these if possible.
The location was fine - about a 15 minute walk to the centre of Sorrento, 5 minutes to the local shops/supermarkets of Sant Agnello. 10 mins to the train stations for easy access across the area and beyond. As others have said, the side lane gets you to Sorrento centre more quickly.
The roof terrace was lovely - sea glimpses; a clear view of Vesuvius; sun beds; and a very comfortable shaded area to relax at the end of a tiring day. The hotel is small and you can either enjoy the peace and quiet (bar a noisy cockrell) or get to know your fellow guests.
The hotel is an excellent base for independent exploration - in 6 days we got to Rome (for two days); a tour of the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and explorations of Sorrento. Public transport was cheap and on time.
The bad .......
There was nothing too bad, however the rooms could do with some updating. The front of the hotel offers better rooms to the back.
The staff at La Pergola really make the holiday a special one. The hotel lacks the facilities of larger hotels, but it has warmth and charm that more than makes up for the room finishes.
If we return to the area, we would return to La Pergola.
Room Tip: Email ahead and ask for a room at the front. It seemed to work for us!
