“Nice Hotel, but not 4 Star”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

We stayed here for one week in September 2011.

The hotel was clean and the staff were friendly and helpful.

The air conditioning in the room was completely inadequate. I asked for it to be fixed on two occasions, but the friendly staff were unable to improve it.

The food in the dining room was only fair. To his credit, the maitre d' noticed that we were not eating dinner in the hotel and offered to prepare something specially for us if we wished. You can't ask for anything better than that. The lights always seemed to be on in the dining room in the evening, so that it resembled a work place canteen rather than a hotel dining room.

The food for lunch beside the pool was better than the food in the evening.

I guess it boils down to two questions:

1. Would I go back to this hotel? Answer: No
2. Would I recommend this hotel to friends? Answer: Probably not.

“spotless hotel but some negatives”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

Went to the Caravel in June this year for our 30th wedding anniversary through Thomson and paid extra for a room with a balcony booked direct with the hotel.
POSITIVES:
room and public areas were spotless
set in a quiet road away from the bustle of Sorrento itself but close to the sea
breakfasts were very good with plenty of choice
bar and reception staff very friendly
NEGATIVES:
balcony was adjacent to another room with only a piece of corrifated frosted plastic between for privacy
evening meal was not brilliant, very small portions for main dish although pasta dishes were delicious. I ordered salmon one night and what arrived was definately not salmon although I did see some people eating eating the real thing. I saw another diner complain about the fish not being salmon so I was not the only one. Strange that they did not order enough in when you had to order your menu choices at breakfast!
Although fortunately it didn't happen to us there were people who had to share a table with complete strangers and you could well there was some awkwardness between them, especially as you had the same table throughout your stay.
lighting in the restaurant was very bright

RECOMMENDATIONS:
out of the hotel, turn left and walk approx 800 metres to Bar 13, nothing to look at just seating on the pavement but cheap and plentiful lunchtime food and drink.
can't remember the name but there's a bar/restaurant on the way into Sorrento next to the football ground upstairs, again reasonable for food and drinks
take train to Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii much cheaper than organised trips.

Would I stay as The Caravel again? I think I would but only B&B and would not pay 50 euros per day extra for a balcony and wiuld have liked complimentry tea and cofee making facilities in the room.

“The Caravel, Sorrento”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2011

Recently returned from Sorrento, spent 7 nights in the Caravel.. I would have no hesitation in recommending the place, great location, ie quiet, yet a short trip to town.. Its clean and my room was more than spacious. Staff were spot on, everything done in a laid back yet effective manner.. Max and Roberta in the bar are both very charming, if you stay make sure you have chats with them.. Minor complaints, proper double beds instead of two singles shoved together would be great. Not sure if this is the case in every room but its a bad idea to have them in any room. Also the breakfast was not to my liking, being Irish it wasnt what I'm used to but we must remember its Europe and thats the way they do things.. I'm sure there are plenty of good hotels in Sorrento but if you do find yourself in the Caravell you could do a lot worse... Ciao....

“Reasonable hotel with good service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

The Hotel is in a quiet area of Sant'Agnello about 1.5km from the centre of Sorrento. This is a good location within walking distance of the centre but away from the hustle and bustle of central Sorrento.

I found service in the Hotel good and rooms are clean and well furnished (see picture). I was upgraded to a “superior” room at no cost from a standard that I had booked. The only “superior” feature however is that the superior rooms are larger and included an extra single bed. I found the room quiet and comfortable with fairly standard 4 star facilities (in room safe, flat screen TV, Air- con and a mini bar).

My only negatives about the room were that there was no included tea and coffee making facilities (you can have this at an extra €4 per night) and double beds were made up of two single mattresses (making them uncomfortable in the middle).

There is a secure car park (charged at €10 a day) which is a good feature if you are driving, as parking around Sorrento (or the wider Amalfi coast / Naples area) is difficult.

The hotel runs a courtesy bus to the centre of Sorrento for those who don’t fancy the walk or find it difficult. They can also arrange excursions which seemed popular (although I personally didn’t try any).

I found the food in the hotel to be more 3 star standard than 4 star although it was tasty and well prepared. Dinner menus had a limited (3 starters, 3 mains and 3 desserts) choice although there was daily variety and breakfast choice was also limited (Hot of bacon egg and sausage, cold choice of ham salami and cheese plus cereals). The restaurant seemed to be more catering for included package guests than the private diner.

There is a pleasant bar area that serves snacks till 2:30 pm daily and had a piano player two nights a week whilst I was there. This was pleasant and relaxing and service at the bar was very good. Drinks were quite expensive but none more so than other establishments in the area.

Overall this is a reasonable hotel with good service without being exceptional at anything. If you can get it at a good price it’s well worth a reservation.
