We were planning to drive from Provence to Switzerland via a roundabout route, and take in Nice along the way. Time and mileage-wise, Monte Carlo seemed a good choice for an overnight stay, but the hotel prices were too steep. Instead, through ViaMichelin online, we stumbled onto this wonderful hotel in San Remo. San Remo, not much further past Monte Carlo, is not the hot spot of the Italian or French Rivieras, but it's a nice little town, certainly convenient on the way towards Turino (Winter Olympics 2006) and the Grand Col du St. Bernard. The hotel room was plush, ornate, with a huge bed and sparkling modern bathroom. There was some traffic on the road outside, but we made our own noise so weren't bothered. We strolled into town for a late night meal, and were welcomed into a great place with local Ligurian cuisine and a reasonable white wine from a nearby vineyard. Breakfast came with our hotel price, and was complete; it gave us an excellent start for the day's drive up the Autostradas, navigating tunnels all the way. Hotel staff was on the Fellini-esque side, which added up to the total charm of the place.
