“No frills but does the trick”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2009

My husband and I recently stayed at the Pollon Inn for approximately 10 days. Overall it was a good experience. The room we stayed in was clean and bright and it was cleaned daily. (The sheets were changed about every 3 days but the towels were changed daily).
The bed was king size and a little hard but comfortable. There is a TV in the room but not much else. The shower is pretty small. The owner was around when we needed him but not always in your face which I liked. If he wasn't there you could contact him on the phone by dialing 999.

It was cheap - 60 euros a night - don't get sucked into those hotels that offer breakfast - they are not worth it because there is a little cafe on every block in San Remo. One of my favourite things was the cappucino machine - it was only .50 cents to have a cappucino or latte and they were delicious!

The hotel is right in the middle of the downtown area and close to everything (the sea, the casino, the stores, cafes, train staion, etc.). You can virtually walk anywhere and get there pretty quick.)

The other advantage is that they have wireless internet so if you bring a laptop(something I would strongly recommend when travelling in Europe) you could connect to the internet at anytime night or day in your room. There was also the added bonus of using the main computer in the common area to print something off if you needed to. The owner provided us with a password and we could use it when he wasn't there.

The other thing is that you can call long distance to any land line and it was free.

The only disadvantage is that it was really really noisy starting at about 6 AM because that's when the city of San Remo starts to wake up until midnight but honestly you will be hard pressed to find a quiet place in San Remo in the downtown area. We brought ear plugs along and that let us sleep a couple of hours longer.

The owner also speaks English as do most people in the tourism area. Just a note of caution - there is no elevator to carry your luggage up so you have to walk up stairs.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone who doesn't want to spend a fortune on a room.

“Just look for the address”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2009

Once you are on the street, it is really not hard to find the building. While the sign may be small, the number 17 is clearly marked, as are the numbers on most of the surrounding buildings. I emailed a couple of times in advance to let them know when I'd be getting there, and someone was there to meet me, but it is true that there is often nobody in the lobby area. However, they claim to be reachable by phone 24 hours a day (I didn't have to try), and able to get there in minutes if you need anything.
Things I liked:
Coffee machine right outside my room - great cappuccino for .5 euro, also sold bottle water and a few snacks
Comfortable bed
Everything clean - daily housekeeping
Great pizza right downstairs
Window opened
Free internet
Free international phone calls!
Things I didn't like:
Very noisy air conditioner
Tiny shower
The room is very small and simple. There is a closet with a little hanging space and shelf space. It was fine for one person, but would have been crowded for more. However, I believe they had larger rooms. I've read different reports on the internet about the total number of rooms - several said only three. I was on the first floor (one up from ground level) and there were four rooms + lobby area on that floor of the building. I was told the hotel also included another four or five rooms another floor up.
Due to the couple of things I mentioned I didn't like, I do not think I got a great bargain. I paid 80 euros per night, which was comparable to what friends paid for more full service hotels, with breakfast, in the area. For me, the location of the Pollon Inn was the main attraction, because I was participating in an event at the Palafiori (convention center) literally less than a block away. I did a lot of walking back from friend's hotels in the evenings, and it felt like the streets were very safe, in keeping with what I was advised.

“Really excellent-don't understand why it has bad reviews”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2008

After reading some of the reviews on here were a little apprehenisive about our stay. We were however plesently surprised. The rooms were large, clean and had air con which was a great plus. There was also someone at reception to sort everything out, so we had no quibbles there. So long as you know your looking for a buzzer to let you in then you should have no problem finding it-there is a large banner on one of balcony's above. We would definately recommend the pollen inn, as it was great value for money.

“definitely different but enjoyed our stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 July 2008

Me and my friend just stayed here and we loved it! Like the other reviews said, it's kind of weird and you hardly ever see people, but that caused no problems for us. The hotel is really cute and small and it is located really close to the train station which was great for us because we were carrying bags. I can see how people would have trouble finding it but we asked a lady in a shop and she pointed us in the right direction. Once you get to the road that it is located on there is a sign on a balcony that has the hotel name on it.

The rooms were cute and the bathroom was great! The shower was tiny, but we have yet to see a big one any where in Italy. The air conditioning worked great and we found the room to be really comfortable. We also loved that there was wi-fi access right in the room, we had to call about the password, but got it no problem.

The location of this place good. Close to the train station and only a five minute walk to the beach. Also it is right down the road from the main plaza. While we were there we were lucky enough to catch a live Italian concert! We loved wandering at night and knowing we were never very far from our hotel. Yeah it was definitely different but we really enjoyed the hotel and absolutely loved San Remo!

  • Liked — Location, good air conditioning, wi-fi in rooms
  • Disliked — The vending machine did eat our money one time!

“Interesting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2007

Okay, the Pollon Inn hotel is unilke any other hotel. First of all, it is IMPOSSIBLE to find. There is a small miniscule sign above the hotel (which used to be an apartment complex) that is not illuminated at night, so you cannot see it. The street name is at the very end of the street and sits more than 12 feet up on another building, and i fading, and since all of the streets are one-way, it is impossible to see it. I searched for an hour finding it, before finally the owner met me outside the Casino and escorted me back to the hotel! Secondly, I only saw someone in the "lobby/office" just once out of my 4 day stay there. Actually, there is no lobby/reception, its just a desk with a phone, fax, and coffee machine! There are blue spotlights "lighting" the halls which is definelty creppy. There are also keys to the all the hotel rooms on the outside of every room, so technically, you can just take any room, and you can get a room without paying for it, considering that there is no receptionist for several days at a time!

HOWEVER

The hotel is within a 5 minute's walk to beach and the main Piazza which is a BIG plus. It is surrounded by great restaurants. In my opinion, the Pollon Inn is a nice hotel. The room sizes are nice. Basic Ikea furniture, but very comfortable beds and pillows! The price is very affordable!

  • Liked — Walking distance to beach and main piazza
  • Disliked — Imposible to find alone
