We were a party of 3 blokes who stayed at the hotel Martin in Jan 2012.
The transfer from Turin airport is quick - about an hour and we were first off the bus, dropped right outside the hotel. We have sttayed in Sauze a few times and its pedestrianised so its usually a drop at the town car park and an uphill walk so this was a nice surprise.
The hotel reception and bar are lovely. There's cake / snacks on the bar, the drinks are reasonably priced (for the alps), the fire is great and its got a good atmos. Sky sports too which came in handy for the mighty Toon victory over QPR an hour after arrival....
We had a largish room with plenty of space for the 3 of us. Simple bathroom, extra blankets etc.. These were used as the room was a pretty cold through the night and before dinner etc. but the room was good and we never felt on top of each other during the stay.
The hotel is smaller than most we;ve stayed in which was a plus when it came to boot room stuff, getting boots on, skiiis out etc, and every morning the night guy was waiting to take us to the lift in his pick-up. This is a nice touch - the lifts are only a 5 minute walk but it was welcome first thing! He also does a ride back from the lift if you return around 4pm...
The hotel food is great - rather diverse but excellent, very tasty and plentiful. The house wine was included with the package and was very good.
The hotel staff are excellent. Very friendy people and most nights Max ran us up to Sauze after dinner without asking for thanks or payment which was greatly appreciated by us as walking up hill that far wasn't an option. Walking back after a few beers via the graveyard route is easy...just make sure you don't get to much momentum as you may not stop!
The snow conditions made for fantastic skiing but didn't allow us to ski down to the town which meant that we had to get on the lift back to town at the half way point. This, however, isn't really an issue as the hotel owner has arranged it so you can leave your skiis at Cici's house - the restaurant directly across from the half way point. This meant we could dump our skiis there at the end of the day, have a beer, jump on the lift, get a ride to the hotel, and next morning we had no skiis to cart around - we got off the lift at Cicis, put our skiis on and jumped back on the lift to Sportinia (which is were the Ski school meets).
The location may not suite the usual Sauze visitor who likes to go into town apres ski and after dinner as the bars etc aren't on the doorstep but I can't say I missed it that much as we had a free ride into town at night and a short downhill walk with a slice of pizza. Returning after a days skiing the options are the bar across the road or the hotel bar. The hotel bar was best.
We went on a couple of the Crystal nights - pub crawl..quiz etc.. which were all great - better than I expected.
Overall this was a great holiday in a very friendly little hotel with good staff and excellent food. you couldn't ask for more really - the fact that we paid quite a bit less than previous holidays in Sauze was a bonus.
Room Tip: Room on upper floor could be cold - ask for lower floors.
