“Hotel Great - Hill Not So”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Great Hotel - staff very friendly and meals brilliant. Never too much trouble - we had a vegan in our group and the staff went overboard making sure she was well catered for. Only downside was the location. We were led to believe it was up a short hill but if you wanted to go into the town in the evening coming back was like climbing Everest. Rooms clean and tidy and always lots of hot water.

“Group Ski Trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

A group of 8 of us chose this Hotel for our annual ski trip booked through Crystal. The first surprise was that we were dropped of at the Tourist Information, our luggage was loaded into a van and we were walked to the Hotel, approximate 20-minutes all up hill (shouldn't that be in the brochure?) there was no snow and the road was dry. They managed to arrange a pick-up/drop-off by mini-bus for a ski away day we'd booked, so assume it was purely cost saving. We also had to walk back to the Tourist Information the day we left, in about 4-5" of snow, so pitied the new arrivers having to walk up!!

The Hotel was clean & warm, our double room (108) was much smaller than the twin rooms that some of our party were in, with a lot less storage space and the balcony (which was an additional cost) about a third of the size. The bathroom had a sink, WC, Bidet & shower, although the sink and the WC were very close/overlapping. That said, it was a good clean warm room and have had much worse. The food was good & plentiful with a varied menu, the staff very efficient and helpful, particularly Ed, the barman. They also had a secure heated ski/boot store which was also very good. I think 3-star is a fair description, the only thing that might have made it better was maybe their own mini-bus, as other hotels have, for trips back from town.

“Not so Splendid”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We booked via Crystal Ski for a week in Sauze, arrived on 29th January. The resort was fantastic, good atmosphere, great snow and skiing. The Crystal Reps especially Colin were great. However the Hotel was not up to standard. Crystal said it was 3.5 stars the hotel board said 3 stars I think it was 2 stars.
The Hotel is at the top of a steep hill and is a pain getting to. One advantage is it helps walk of and late night beers! However a short walk across the road and a neighbours garden your on the slopes, so ski in ski out is great. The boot room is under the hotel and you have to walk outside down a slope to get to it. The room is heated but the book racks are not so they are a little cold and damp.
The hotel is very dated, more 1970's very tired in our opinion and in some of the corridors there is a damp smell, particularly in the two person lift. The room was a disappointment and when we asked and were prepared to pay for an upgrade we were informed we were in one of the best rooms. The rooms are just tired, the bathroom very small. The TV doesn't pick up much and from the bed was very small. The room could have been warmer. The units were chipped and very open plan for putting clothes on. We put a deposit on the room safe which was fine. To put simply it wasn't 3 star standard but it did do the job. On a positive it was clean and tidy, in fact despite the hotels tired look everything was clean.
The staff were all friendly and helpfull, especial mention must go to Eddy the barman, our room cleaner and the waitress staff. The swimming pool was fine as was the whole area below the hotel, however the sauna was small , for a hotel that has 80 plus guests it can only fit two people and is falling apart, but does work. The shame is that you are not supplied robes so the trip down in the smelly lift is a little cold.
All the above I can live with to be honest, the biggest let down was the food. Breakfast was poor with the only hot item apart from drinks available being scrambled egg, the milk was not fresh but was UHT which isn't the best taste on cereal, the break was the cheap plastic stuff, but the toaster was great. Dinner (you choose the day before) was a salad bar which was ok, a starter normally a pasta dish which was again ok, as in it would fill you up but taste wasn't great. Main course was very poor and without exception both my wife and I left it, always poor quality, not cooked well or tasteless. Desert was ok if you stick to ice cream. We ate out 3 nights as I was starving for something that had taste and could fill me up. In the dinning room there is a table for the owner/manager who sat down at the same time often with their own friends etc, But they didn't have the same food as us, their food looked good, fresh and certainly wasn't what we had.
We read trip advisor before we came over and new about the hill but didn't expect such a poor quality hotel and food. As for the resort its great, would recommend the ski trip to France on your pass for the day.
We would go back to Sauze but not to the Splendid.

Room Tip: Make sure your on floor one or above, if your downstairs by the pool its very dark.

“Hotel Splendid”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

4 of us spent the 2nd week of January in this Hotel. With a little walk to our place of stay we knew we were going to be looked after!
The bootroom under the hotel was heated, no problems. The food was lovely, the bar stayed open until you wanted, Ed the barman is a class act and made our good holiday a great one!
The staff cant do enough for you, and if you get a chance to eat out, go to their Restaurant in the town, you wont be dissapointed!
We met some great people, the snow was perfect, the sun shone everyday. It is the only place that my friends and i have said, yes, i would go back there!!!
Do it!

Phil, Tom, Mart and Nath

Room Tip: 109, 209, 309 etc. i think these are the bigger rooms

“Great hotel, lovely week”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

Just returned from what my partner and I think was probably one of the best ski weeks we have had over the last seven years. Our hoilday was booked through Crystal who's rep's were as helpful and friendly as anyone could wish for; we loved the escorted ski trips.
The hotel room was a good size for the two of us, with a balcony looking over the mountains and was cleaned every day to a high standard. The swimming pool was a huge bonus not massive but perfectly useable and the changing rooms and shower areas were constantly being cleaned. The Sauna was on the cosy side so this is best booked at the ever friendly and helpfully reception. Ed the barman was a lovely fella showing a real interest in our day on the Piste and always had a smile. The food both at breakfast and evenings was plentiful and cooked to a good standard with a choice of three main courses, but a queue could form at the rather slow hot drinks dispensers in the mornings and at the buffet style anti Pasto table in the evening but the waitress were always on hand to help and once again always seem happy in their work. Only one downside, the hill could be a bit of a slog at times, but there is an unofficial route to the Clotes chair lift which is to take the private road opposite and walk a small distance to the Piste then it was just a short ski to the lift itself or of course there was always the ski bus that stopped directly outside the hotel.
Overall we think this was a super place to stay and would not hesitate in returning should we decide to visit Sauze again
