We booked via Crystal Ski for a week in Sauze, arrived on 29th January. The resort was fantastic, good atmosphere, great snow and skiing. The Crystal Reps especially Colin were great. However the Hotel was not up to standard. Crystal said it was 3.5 stars the hotel board said 3 stars I think it was 2 stars.
The Hotel is at the top of a steep hill and is a pain getting to. One advantage is it helps walk of and late night beers! However a short walk across the road and a neighbours garden your on the slopes, so ski in ski out is great. The boot room is under the hotel and you have to walk outside down a slope to get to it. The room is heated but the book racks are not so they are a little cold and damp.
The hotel is very dated, more 1970's very tired in our opinion and in some of the corridors there is a damp smell, particularly in the two person lift. The room was a disappointment and when we asked and were prepared to pay for an upgrade we were informed we were in one of the best rooms. The rooms are just tired, the bathroom very small. The TV doesn't pick up much and from the bed was very small. The room could have been warmer. The units were chipped and very open plan for putting clothes on. We put a deposit on the room safe which was fine. To put simply it wasn't 3 star standard but it did do the job. On a positive it was clean and tidy, in fact despite the hotels tired look everything was clean.
The staff were all friendly and helpfull, especial mention must go to Eddy the barman, our room cleaner and the waitress staff. The swimming pool was fine as was the whole area below the hotel, however the sauna was small , for a hotel that has 80 plus guests it can only fit two people and is falling apart, but does work. The shame is that you are not supplied robes so the trip down in the smelly lift is a little cold.
All the above I can live with to be honest, the biggest let down was the food. Breakfast was poor with the only hot item apart from drinks available being scrambled egg, the milk was not fresh but was UHT which isn't the best taste on cereal, the break was the cheap plastic stuff, but the toaster was great. Dinner (you choose the day before) was a salad bar which was ok, a starter normally a pasta dish which was again ok, as in it would fill you up but taste wasn't great. Main course was very poor and without exception both my wife and I left it, always poor quality, not cooked well or tasteless. Desert was ok if you stick to ice cream. We ate out 3 nights as I was starving for something that had taste and could fill me up. In the dinning room there is a table for the owner/manager who sat down at the same time often with their own friends etc, But they didn't have the same food as us, their food looked good, fresh and certainly wasn't what we had.
We read trip advisor before we came over and new about the hill but didn't expect such a poor quality hotel and food. As for the resort its great, would recommend the ski trip to France on your pass for the day.
We would go back to Sauze but not to the Splendid.
Room Tip: Make sure your on floor one or above, if your downstairs by the pool its very dark.
