“Great value for money and excellent service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 February 2011

We stayed at the Hotel Villa Cary in early Feb 2011 and had a great time at the hotel and on the slopes.

The hotel is well situated for all the shops, bars and restaurants yet still quiet enough at night. The bus stop for transfer to the two lifts is situated right outside, and the owner Marilyn sorted out ski and board hire for us from a shop opposite which offered really good quality gear.

The staff are mainly family members, very welcoming and friendly. Evening meals were set menu, and the food was always plentiful. The food courses weren't the most inventive and a bit like school dinners but always good quality (always a pasta or soup starter, mains were roast beef and mash, chicken and chips, pork and potatoes, then dessert would be ice cream, fruit or pudding of some sort).

The rooms are dated but always clean and very comfy, ours even had a balcony. The bathroom was similar, but all three rooms we had suffered from showers that often ran lukewarm. Must be a plumbing problem and I must admit we forgot to mention this to Marilyn so possibly there is a simple solution.

We had a great time on the slopes with plenty of runs in the Milky Way, good snow, sun and blue sky all week. Sauze also seemed good value compared to other ski resorts (3-4 euros for a beer, 2 for wine).

The only other point I'd make is the booking process for Villa Cary, as I had to transfer our deposit in euros rather than simply over the phone or internet with a credit card. The bank transfer was hard work as it has to be completed in a branch because it is international, and most banks charge a fee.

All in all though a good value hotel and we really enjoyed our stay!

“villa cary...a beautiful holiday!!!”

Just to thank Marilyn and staff for another fantastic holiday at Sport Hotel Sauze d'Oulx. We had a great week and were really lucky with the weather, sun every day and snow still good; were able to ski right back down to village and almost to the Sport. Taht's what we like about the hotel, great locatin! Food at villa cary was great as usual with homemade lasagna on the first night delicius. What was good this year was that there was a soup alternative to pasta as one of our party doesn't like pasta. Also been told that as we asked we will have kettle and cups in rooms for next year to have a cup of tea. Roll on 2012!!!!

“Perfect location, incredibly friendly people and exceeded all expectations”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 April 2009

I have just returned from my second stay at the Villa Cary hotel and could not ask for more. Working for a luxury travel specialist means I don't normally stay in 2 star hotels and some of the comments below made me a bit dubious, but the Villa Cay exceeded all expectations! The rooms may be small, but they're perfectly comfortable with cosy beds, they're clean, have newly laid wooden floors and are nice and warm. What's more the people are incredibly friendly and its easy to see why so may guests return year after year - during my stay there was a family of 3 generations who had stayed at the hotel every year since 1997 and the grandson (now 3) was learning to ski!!

The hotel is ran by Marilyn (who is from England), Ezio (her husband), Davide (their son who is bilingual) and Ferruccio (Ezio's brother). Ezio, Davide and Ferruccio teach at the main ski school and if you're having lessons they make sure you're looked after, but also do private lessons if you want to brush up on your technique.

Everyone at the hotel is really helpful and are the best people to ask on what slopes to aim for, where to hire skis for minimum walking/carrying and which places to see.

The hotel is located just off the main square so its far enough away if you're looking for a quiet night, but just around the corner from all the action!

I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending the Villa Cary to anyone and Sauze is a great ski resort. You have access to the entire milkyway and even after my second week, I don't feel I've seen it all...counting down the days until next year already!

“Great value and great atmosphere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2008

I stayed here with some friends whilst on a ski trip. The hotel is dated but the rooms were clean and comfortable. It was half-board and the food was great - The owners were lovely and really added to the atmosphere (The owner is and English lady who has married an Italian)
The bus stop for acces to the slopes is directly outside the hotel which is great but you can walk the chairlift within a few minutes if you dont mind carrying your skis.
I found the location quiet with all the bars enough distance away to not be a problem (but close enough for us to attend!)
The village is nice but head to the old part of town for the rustic feel with some great restaurants and bars.
Skiing in the Viallatea (Milky Way) is really quite good - there are several challenging runs if you are advanced.
All in all I have rated it 3 (Proabably 3 and a half) as despite needing an update I really enjoyed my stay and feel that the atmosphere and location really made our holiday.
I would recommend anyone to stay.

“Great food, but shame about the room.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2008

The hotel itself is quite old, not been touched for at least 30 years, but the staff are very nice. The food was excellent for a 2 star hotel, set meals every night, but all were very tasty. The rooms however, left alot to be desired. Our room,(rm 12), was approx 3m sq. this included the 'so-called' en-suite, which was minute, with a very rickety, 'bodge job' shower rail (half hanging off the wall), a toilet you couldn't hardly get to to sit on, and to top it all, no hot water or working shower for two days ! The massive 'victorian' radiator was on full chat all night, so if you couldn't sleep for all the noise going on from the 'lager louts' outside at closing time (approx 4am) then you got baked in your sleep! I had read various reviews about Sauze D'Oulx, which said the resort would suit a single male of age 25-40, looking for a good booze up and sky football all day long, these were unfortunately absolutely spot on. We were a party of 3, 2 adults and one child aged 12, and there was nothing for a family to do, other than walk around and eat take away pizza. The ski-ing on the other hand was absolutely marvellous. Great slopes and lovely weather, at least for half of the week, but of course we can't control the weather. The mountain restaurants have nothing on Austria. The food quality and indeed price, varied enormously from place to place. The best we found was Col Bourget on blue run 30. A bit of a hike to along a flat trail, but the food was lovely, with waitress service and the cheapest we came across. Beware of runs that are not open, especially if going to Sestriere, as we were caught out when we couldn't get back to Sauze. We had to catch a bus from Sestriere town, which took nearly 3 hours in total! The signposts around the runs were quite minimal, almost on a need to know basis! So you should always make sure you know what lifts are open and which aren't. We have been skiing to Austria four times, and we can very safely say, in Sauze D'oulx, although the runs are good, certain aspects of your holiday, like accomodation, facilities for families and lunchtime on the slopes leave alot to be desired and do not even come close to those in Austria.

  • Liked — The food was very nice.
  • Disliked — the room and its facilities.
