“Food was excellent, the rest of the hotel was not.”

I stayed in Biencaneve, Sauze d'Oulx from the 23rd January for 7 days with 5 friends. I have many negative points to raise about the whole experience however I'll start by saying that the twins who run the hotel work very hard to keep it how they like it and that the food in the evening is superb.
The beds reminded me of camp beds, were lumpy and too short for a 6'2" man (my feet hung over the edge). We were only offered one pillow which meant for me that I took the folded pillow option.
This could be normal for Italy, and it has been mentioned in previous reviews but the sit down bath/ shower set up is totally impractical. I had trouble sitting down, so took a gorilla like stance, shower head in one hand, bracing against the toilet with the other, in order to wash myself. The upshot of this was that every morning and evening my friend and I would cover the bathroom floor, toilet and anything else in the bathroom with water.
The thing that irritated me the most however, was the distinct lack of respect for one's possessions. The rooms are cleaned everyday by one if not both of the sisters, and without fail at the end of every day, most of my things have been moved about, whether it was putting my camera in a drawer or my headphones back in a suitcase for example. We once returned to our room to find that my friend's shoes had mysteriously disappeared, we discovered them outside freezing on the windowsill two days later. My snowboard bag was removed from under the bed and was unceremoniously thrown in the boot store, I wasn't told and had to find it myself.
The sisters really do work hard to keep it how they like it, not how their guests might prefer it.
I very much felt like I was being mothered and being referred to as 'boy' all week didn't help. It could be miscommunication but for a 26 year old professional I found it a little patronising.
On only one of the evenings did we come back late and stay in bed until 1130. This subsequently meant that the cleaning couldn't be done. We were confronted by 'the morning' sister and told off..... Bearing in mind that we had paid to use these rooms. The top sheets of our beds were removed later in the day and not returned until the next morning as some sort of punishment. That night was a chilli one!
All in all, I found my experience at the Biencaneve a bad one. I can't recommend the hotel to any particular group as the the facilities aren't sufficient enough for a family, and the sisters aren't accommodating enough for a group of friends or a couple.
I would sum this hotel up as being an expensive hostel.

“just ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2010

stayed here for a weeks skiing at new year (dec 08/jan 09)
we were fairly young and felt the place was not for us
sauze d'oulx is meant as a bit of a party resort , and i got the feeling the owners wanted everyone home in bed by 10 at night.
so if your wound - avoid
if your older go for it !

“lovely family hotel with great food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 April 2009

Booked this on the basis of the 'older' reviews commenting on the great food and service and was slightly worried by the later reviews. However I needn't have been. Everything was ready when we arrived and were straight into our room, which was a fair size compared with rooms in more expensive skiing holidays/resorts such as Meribel. I did wonder about the half size bath in which half of that was a seat shape, and shower attachment. One of my bugbears is a poor shower. However after the first days skiing, being able to sit in the bath with the thankfully powerful shower and plenty of hot water was a blessing!

The location is okay, whilst not ski to the door, it is less than a 10 minute walk to the Clotes ski lift, however up hill and I prefered not to clump my way up hill in ski boots, the ski bus is a 30 second clump down hill, and a pleasant five minute bus ride to sportina. We skied to the bottom on Clotes at the end of the day and the down hill clump was easy, especially with a stop off in the main square for apres ski.

The food is fantastic, traditional italian. There was a choice of two options for starter and main course and a one option of desert. Personally made my life easier to only have two options to choose from, however this was mainly because the quality of the food was brilliant. And there was plenty of it, seconds always offered and it took some will power to say no. The hotel has a local reputation for feeding you up! The wine list is also very good (although I found every where is the resort served excellent wine).

The sisters were very helpful and friendly, speaking excellent english; and whilst the hotel was only partly full, the other guests were there for the first time as well, so there wasn't any sense of exclusion. Whilst it is a small hotel and doesn't have the facilities of the larger hotels, if you prefer cosy and homely with great food, this is for you.

“Not much fun here.”

I had high expectations of this hotel after reading the reviews.
In reality it's a cross between Fawlty Towers and an old folks home. It has British regulars, old people that return each year and go to bed at 10pm. New guests are excluded by both the guests and owners.
Breakfast is hopeless, not even a boiled egg.
Dinner is three course. First course good Italian stodge. Second course a piece of meat and a few taties or spinach.
Third course is just a bit of fruit or a slice of cake, there is no choice.

My most miserable skiing holiday for years (and the snow was superb).

“A satisfying stay”

We spent two nights at the Biancaneve after the Easter week-end.
The accommodations were very satisfactory: clean, functional, comfortable, and quiet (but the hotel was nearly empty).
The hotel is within wallking distance to shops, restaurants, bars, and the old town.
Breakfast was OK, but there was just a small quantity of ham and cheese, which was not renewed for latecomers.
The breakfast/dining room also extends to a lounge area (couch, boardgames, etc) and bar.
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Overall a pleasant experience.

  • Liked — warm welcome, cleanliness
  • Disliked — absence of view, spartan decorum
