I stayed in the Grand Hotel Liberty, Riva Del Garda, on a group tour from Ireland. First impressions - wow!!! very impressive position and frontage. However I was there in early March and the weather was rubbish - must go again in the summer when I can enjoy the gardens and the location. Room - I was on my own and had a single room - was adequate. I was at the side of the hotel with a view over the conference centre/function room and car park and an apartment block. The room was fine. I was a smoker at the time of my visit and so could not smoke in the room - and would not. So I used to go down to the covered terrace area on the ground floor for a smoke. This was fine most of the time but the morning I woke early and scared the hell out of one of the poor hotel staff (from Sri Lanka I think) who was sleeping on one of the couches in the area outside the restaurant and inside the terrace - well he jumped, I jumped and I never went down that early again. Breakfast was great - staff really pleasant- and when I went down early and the cooked items were not available the waiters would have gotten them for me - I didn't need or want them. The only problem with the entire stay - and I doubt this is a problem with the hotel - is that with tour groups you have to sit at the same table in the hotel for every meal and every morning you get a menu for that evening and have to tick what you want to eat. Dinners were not great - ate out most of the time because there were a lot of lovely restaurants in the area. But for a great location, great staff and great breaksfasts I can't complain. Another little niggle - the bar is in the basement and is not that large. When there is some sport on TV or an event like a wedding the small space is totally taken over by locals - fine but.........
