“Excellent hotel,food and area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2010

Just come back from 2 weeks in Hotel Garda. We found the hotel to be very good overall. The food was excellent and varied. We had a choice of 3 main meals as part of a 4 course menu every night. Some evenings there was a gala menu with aperitifs first and we were lucky enough to have wine and water included. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our only complaint would be that our room was at the back and was noisy at times-- both from the internal plumbing and external noise of glass bottles being dumped, sometimes at unsocial hours. However this would not stop us going there again. The hotel is in a good position for lakeside walks and not too far from the centre of town where you can get lake boats and/or buses

“time warp”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2010

A pleasant hotel stuckin a 60,s time warp.
Clean -cannot be faulted-- food average to good.
facilities reasonable --bikes for guests use --good.
UNABLE TO PURCHASE DRINKS WITH CASH--POOR.
Location out of town --15 minutes walk or 8 min cycle.
ENTERTAINMENT VERY POOR--LITTLE EFFORT TO KEEP GUESTS WITHIN HOTEL IN THE EVENING.
MANAGEMENT--Well if you enjoy a tv above your head in the dining room showing football fine--for the benefit of the hotels family.
Tries hard but with some up to date management could be very good.

“Great resort, dissapointing hotel....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2010

Opening the bedroom door was such a dissapointment, not a great start, the room was meant to have been refurbished but I think has basically been painted and new flooring laid. The furniture is chipped and dated. Soft furnishings just all so old fashioned. I want to come to a similar standard or better than what I have at home especially at these prices.
The bathroom had NOT been refurbished and was dark and claustophobic. I also returned one day to find part of the ceiling panels had fallen down. The balcony's are tiny, single file only and if the person sitting at the end needs to go to the loo then everyone needs to decant to the bedroom!
We asked to be moved on arrival and were shown to rooms on the 5th floor which were even worse, even the Thomson rep agreed this should not be a 4 star hotel...however it is a beautiful resort and we decided to make the best of it.
We were half board and I don"t really know how to describe the food apart from saying it reminded me of institution food, having worked in hospitals for 30 years, it was often served tepid on cold plates, very unappealing.
In it's favour, the staff were very friendly and helpful and we liked the location. I found the hotel clean and Riva itself is a delight.
Would not go back to this hotel

“Basic Hotel, but AVOID POOL AREA due to mosquitoes”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2010

The hotel was situated in a nice location. Riva Del Garda is very pleasant, although the hotel is a 20-minute walk from the centre. Nonetheless, the surrounding area is very nice and the walk is very pleasant to and from the centre.

The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and I couldn't fault them; excellent here. The waiters and bar-staff seemed to work extremely hard and were able to sort out any issues we had.

The rooms were OK. Basic, perhaps in need of updating. We were on the 2nd floor. The rooms smelt a little funny, were dusty in places and we found a silverfish there one morning. The beds were a little uncomfortable, but manageable. However, the bathroom and balcony was small.

In the dining room, several chairs were in need of repair work. My chair, like several others had springs coming out of the bottom of it and I found myself sinking towards the floor in at least one meal. However, the reception, bar area and dining room were very clean. The quality of the food was very good. Some of the meals were accompanied by music. Most musicians were very good. However one was unable of playing more than a few lines of music without many obvious mistakes.

The WORST problem with this hotel is the flies and mosquitoes in the area. The bar area, and especially the pool had many of them. We went for a swim in the pool but never again, as after a few minutes at the pool side, we had both been bitten several times, this despite using insect repellent. AVOID the pool area due to all costs- the bottom of the pool was dirty and I never saw anyone clean it all week. I think I may have also been bitten in bed by mosquitoes that sneaked into our room.

I would recommend this hotel once the above issues are fixed, but not before. However, having seen the outside of some of the other hotels in Riva, I would doubt whether you would get a better standard of accommodation.

“A fabulous location for a honeymoon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2010

This hotel is at the heart of riva and a short walk to access ferries to other lake garda resorts. Although the room on floor two was smaller than we expected, it was imaculately clean and had everything we needed. shower was fab and views fantastic of mountains.Dissapointed that nobody acknowledged we were on honeymoon, but our request for a view was acknowledged when we rang hotel before arrival.
receptionist spoke good english but other staff spoke little.
A very hospitable and friendly hotel and a good time to go as it wasnt very busy.
The food is plentiful and wll prepared.
The pool is freezing but we did swim in it.
We are in love with Riva and would return to this hotel.
