On a recent trip to Tuscany we decided to spend a couple of days in Emilia Romagna to check out the food of that area since we had heard so much about it. Reggio nell’ Emilia seemed the perfect place, located between Parma and Modena, and the Hotel Posta seemed the logical choice for that town. We could not have been more pleasantly surprised!
Coming into Reggio we were surprised at how large the town is but once you get to the historical center you would never know it. It has small town charm and appeal with big town amenities. Everyone rides bicycles and the hotel has free loaners for its guest. What a treat to get on a bicycle and go shopping all over town, and there is plenty of shopping to do in Reggio!
The Hotel Posta could not have been more charming or hospitable! Getting there by car is a challenge but it is well marked, just pay close attention and follow the signs. As soon as you arrive you are warmly greeted and immediately feel welcome. The hotel itself is a wonderful old building but with modern conveniences. Our room, a junior suite, faced a large piazza with a small balcony. There was always something going on outside but it was never a distraction. The space has extremely high ceilings, beautiful décor and a well appointed modern bath. The junior suite includes a separate sitting and sleeping area, all the furnishings are high quality and comfortable. The breakfast area was quite nice and the offerings for breakfast were ample and delicious, featuring the regional specialties such as Parma prosciutto and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. Don’t miss the downstairs bar next to the reception desk! The fixtures are from an old pastry shop in Reggio and it makes for an excellent place to have a quiet drink from the well stocked honor bar.
All that being said, what really makes the Hotel Posta stand out are its manager, Umberto Sidoli, and his excellent staff. They all go out of their way to make you feel at home, answer your questions and help in any way possible to make your stay more enjoyable. A “must do” trip while staying at the Hotel Posta is a visit to the Sidoli family Farm, Cavazzone, where they make the world famous Balsamic vinegar of Reggio.
Cavazonne is a magical place for both its location and beauty. A short drive from the hotel, (the staff will help with transportation if you don’t have a car) this trip was the highlight of our stay in Reggio and possibly of the entire three week trip to Italy. The tour of the Balsamic facilities and the family’s estate and gardens was topped off by one of the most remarkable meals we have ever had in Italy at the Cavazzone restaurant. The setting, food, wine, staff and service were outstanding and the menu and dishes are designed to be complemented by their outstanding Balsamic vinegar! Make sure to plan ahead to include this visit as I believe they are closed on Mondays.
Reggio makes an excellent place to spend a couple of days if you are flying in or out of Milan. It’s an easy drive on the autostrada to or from Malpensia but regardless of where your plans take you in Italy, you owe it to yourself to include Reggio, the Hotel Posta and Cavazzone on your itinerary!
Room Tip: The Junior Suite was well worth small increase in price!
