My wife and I stayed here in November 2011 and we had a great time. Yes, it is hard to find, but it is well worth it. Piece of advice, use Google maps on a smartphone. The GPS units don't get the location right.
The food in the hotel is good and the staff is very nice. I would not spend the money on the breakfast, but the dinner is worth it after a long day of sightseeing. Be sure to spend time in the cellar after dinner. We met some other Americans who were staying at the hotel and had a great time of trading stories about what we say and where we went each day. The owner will kick you out of the cellar around midnight, but that was OK. The wine is self serve, so you are on your own. Sure, the wait staff is not like staying at a Marriott, but we didn't travel that far to stay in a homogenized hotel block style hotel.
The views each morning are worth the drive up there. We had one morning where we above the clouds and it was great.
The hotel rooms are much larger than we had in Rome or Venice. And the kitchenette was great to cook a couple of meals in. There is a small grocery store just north of the hotel that had great meats and cheeses. Try the picorini (sp?) and the salamis. Phenonmenal. I ate them for breakfast some mornings.
Regarding the location, spend a few minutes before you leave the US to find the hotel and map it on google. We took the train to Florence one day, which was all we decided to spend there. The next day we went to Sienna and it took about 1 to 1.5 hours. The next day we did Pisa, and again took about 1.5 hours. There was one guy who spent 3 hours trying to get to Sienna, but he must not have taken the interstate.........
All in all, it was a good place to stay. Different, but also memorable at the same time. My parents are looking to visit Italy this May, and we are going to recommend this to them.
