We had quite high expectations of Ravello and La Villette Apartments having read the other reviews and we were not disappointed. We were greeted at a fairly late hour by the friendly owner, us having failed miserably at the last hurdle to find the apartments despite good directions downloaded from their website! However we couldn't wait to get out there and literally unpacked the vitals and went to the first restaurant we came across, La Veechia Cantina where our first "proper" Italian pizza and a bottle of local wine really hit the spot. We actually returned to this restaurant twice during our holiday due to the fantastic views of the hills, the friendly service and gorgeous food.
On our first morning we ventured into the Piazza Duomo, the town square, where it quite literally took our breath away with the beautiful, heavy scent of blossom, the surrounding views of the hills and the very commanding cathedral, all bathed in warm sunshine. We spent many an hour sitting at the various outside coffee/food venues just people watching. We actually saw a wedding party gathering in the square before the big event at the cathedral itself.
We hired a car for the week and yes the mountain/coastal roads certainly make for much bottom clenching but it was worth it for the views!! However just be warned of the local drivers, they are very impatient with slow drivers (tourists) and will overtake you on a bend which can be quite alarming to watch. We would recommend visiting Positano, a truly pretty town on the coast. If you like busy towns Amalfi is for you, however, we couldn't wait to return to Ravello for peace and tranquility again!
Back to the apartments, we found them to be very comfortable and clean in a lovely location just 5 minutes walk from the town centre itself. The pool was cold but clean with stunning views from your sunbed, we had it to ourselves one afternoon, bliss.
The only criticism I would have at all with our holiday was in relation to our car hire. We were given an extremely basic map giving directions back to Naples Airport, with more detail we would not have come off the autostrade (motorway) too soon and driven around Central Naples for an hour and a half with little or no directions to the airport. When we stopped to ask a Policeman he apologised for his lack of English but did laugh and manage to say "you're a very long way"! If we had not have left Ravello an hour earlier than planned we would have missed our plane so TIP - buy your own map!
