“Reasonably priced with beautiful sea views - Highly Recommended!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 May 2010

I stayed at the Continental last July (2009) for 1 week with my boyfriend. We chose these apartment because they seemed reasonably priced compared to most in the region. The Amalfi Coast is very expensive! I was expecting pretty standard accomodation, but was pleasantly suprised at our amazing sea view from our bedroom balcony! It was absolutely breath-taking! I have never had such a beautiful view before! There were even grape-vines growing on the balcony! The room itself was quite basic but clean, with air con and a small fridge. The bathroom was tiny, but clean. I don't think you can do any better for your money in this location! The breakfast was continental-style, toast, jams, yoghurts, and cereals, with a different type of cake each day! The hotel seems to jut off the brink of a cliff over the sea so the views from the restaurant are just incredible. The hotel is situated in Praiano, which is about a 15 min drive from Amafi itself. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND CAR HIRE IF YOU ARE STAYING ANYWHERE ON THE AMALFI COAST!!! Also, I would not recommend this region of Italy if you are unfit or physically disabled in any way, you have to climb HUNDREDS of steps to get ANYWHERE in this region! I have uploaded some photos of the beautiful beach which is a 5 minute bus journey up the road, you will have to ask the hotel staff for directions as it is pretty hidden and secluded! You have to climb over a small wall and then descend down hundreds of crumbling steps to the peblle beach. It is exhausting, but once you get down there you will appreciate how beautiful and tranquil it is compared to most of the Amalfi Coast!

This was the best holiday I have been on so far. The Amalfi Coast is stunning, and The Continental is a more affordable way of visiting the region, the views from the apartments are just divine! I would definately recommend this place to anyone!!!

“Wonderful views, lovely people, great place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2009

We stayed at the Hotel for 5 nights at the end of Oct 2009 - our first trip to the Amalfi coast. After a flight to Naples and a tiring car journey we were welcomed by the Hotel owner Antonio with those magic words - come, relax sit on the terrace and I'll bring you a drink!
The views are unbelievable! We visisted lots of places along the Amalfi coast but none better than from our balcony - have a look at the web site for the pics - they are 100% accurate!
Antonio and his brother were wonderful hosts, nothing was too much trouble and we had a fantastic stay. Internet access is freely available, the home style italian cooking was brilliant (especially the pasta fagiole!). and the atmosphere in the Hotel was relaxed and easy going .There was free parking space - which is a big deal on the Amalfi coast. and overall it was a great experience and great value.
Praiano is a picturesque village strung along the coast road. The Hotel is situated on the east side of the town but restaurants like "Le Brace are on the west side of town (approx 1.5 km away along a dark and busy road). I recommend using the very efficient local buses to go to and fro - there is a Tabachi 50m from the hotel where you can get the tickets but get an accurate timetable!
The Hotel is a great base to visit the lovely towns of the Amalfi coast - Positano, Amalfi, Ravello etc and it's a wonderful relaxing place to stay. We'll always remember the early evenings, sipping prosecco on the restaurant terrace - fantastic! - go see for yourself!
We're definitely going back.

“Felt like family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2009

I was travelling with my mom and we were at the end of a 3 week trip. I emailed a few hotels on the Amalfi Coast looking for a place to relax for the last few days of our time together. Antonio sent back a very nice, welcoming email with directions to his hotel and a wonderful description of what we would find when we arrived.
A couple weeks before we left home, my mom had broke her foot. When we walked into the lobby/restaurant to check in Antonio listened to the fact my mom had a bad foot and made sure we had the most accessible room in the hotel. When he saw she was cold he boiled water and made her tea (without us asking) and set her up in a chair by the wood stove. (It was unseasonably cold and rainy on the Coast the day we arrived). Antonio, his family and everyone else at the hotel were extremely helpful with giving suggestions of what we could do in the area.
The view from our balcony was spectacular and the dinners, soup and wine were definitely things we could 'write home about.' The hotel is at a SITA bus stop right between Amalfi and Positano.
If you are looking for a quiet place to slow down for a few days, this is the place to be. If you want more action...the bus takes you there in 10-15 minutes for a mere 2 Euro. We are very thankful that Antonio took the time to respond to my email and that we chose to spend our last few days here.

“Amazing view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2009

My wife and I stayed 5 nights at Hotel Continental in september 2009.
It is a beatiful place placed on the rocks with a amazing view over the sea.
The restaurant is nice and cosy for breakfast and dinner.
The bus for Sorrento and Amalfi stops right outside this hotel.
We liked this "old" hotel and its sorrounding very much and especially the service given from the owners.
Ole

“A Month in Paradise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2009

My partner and I spent the whole of August 2009 at the Hotel Continental (also known, aptly, as La Tranquillitá). This is a hotel in a million - set beside the sea, easily accessible from the coast road between Sorrento and Amalfi, just outside the district of Vettica (which is the settlement that travel brochures call Praiano village, though the centre of Praiano is actually directly above this hotel). Despite its position near the Sita bus stop, it's quiet, peaceful, totally free from traffic noise because it 's built on terraces on the cliff between the main road and the sea.

We stayed in one of the little bungalows below the main hotel. These are now fully and efficiently air-conditioned and have fridges and hair-dryers. The balconies of this hotel all have sea-views, without exception. We had the choice of staying in the main building of La Tranquillitá, which dates from the mid-700's. In there, we could have had a room with a beautiful old fresco on the wall, obviously an original decoration from the days when this was a family villa. These rooms are cool and dark, with startlingly white balconies facing the sea. We preferred the cabin we chose, with its balcony railings of olive wood and the vines curling around the neighboring walls, because of its total privacy and its particularly beautiful view of rocks out in the sea.

There are also larger apartments run by the same hotel, in the building next door, which are more expensive - they have very large rooms and wide balconies. What we had was just right for a couple who wanted a reasonable rent and plenty of privacy.

We chose not to eat at the hotel restaurant very often because we were finding the euro exchange rate quite tough, but the set menus are good value, and included three courses of home cooked food for the price of two courses elsewhere. Breakfast has been upgraded a lot since the last time we were there and now includes cereal, fruit juice, yoghourt and pastries.

The people who run the Continental have a knack of introducing travellers to each other, and it's a place you could easily enjoy visiting on your own. This time, we chose to keep ourselves to ourselves because we were engrossed in writing and painting. Nevertheless, we met other artists, musicians and writers who choose the Continental for its atmosphere.

As a single traveller also, in the past, I've met friends from all over the world who return to the Continental again and again from Australia, USA and other European countries, as well as many Italian "regulars". The warm welcome we get there explains it all.

The Continental Hotel is unique - it even has its own Facebook fan club - and this year the extensive refurbishments that they have undertaken made it even more comfortable than before. The shower is always hot and strong (like Nello's espressos!), the air-con is super-efficient and easily controlled, the beds are super-comfy - and the rest is location, location, location.
