This year in Positano was exceptional due to the unprecedented warm weather well into October. We again stayed at Pupetto Hotel even though the elevators were our of order. We understand that some people chose not to stay there because of that but it did not deter our enjoyment of the location in any way.
Pupetto is a very basic hotel. Rooms are clean but do not offer anything other than a bed, a mini refrigerator and a basic bathroom. There is no room service so you are on your own if you wish to eat and enjoy the stunning view from your balcony.
The family who operate this hotel are ok but nobody is really forthcoming with any kind of personality. They just function but do not offer any type of conversation or go overboard to ask how you are or if there is anything else they can do to help.
Therefore, it is truly a no frills hotel but worth every penny because of the relatively low cost and amazing location.
We found that the food in the restaurant was not as good as in the past and they only offered the wood oven pizza on weekends starting end of September which is odd since it is such a prime item on the menu and delicious and Positano is bursting with tourists at that time.
The beach is lovely but can be expensive if you stay for a longer term as the hotel does not offer any discount for their guests on the lounge chairs or beach towels offered at a cost of 7 euros per person per day.
Interestingly, one of the hotels at the top of the hill which we frequented in the past has always offered us a 10% discount in their hotel restaurant and even still do now whenever we visit as repeat restaurant guests as well as give us a mini bottle of Limoncello a popular drink in the region.
It is all about the small touches that people remember which keep them coming back. As much as we enjoy Pupetto, I can say that it is not about any small touches from any of the staff (mostly family) and have come to accept that. Never a free drink, fruit plate or little desert of any sort to say thanks for the business.
Assuming the price continues to stay low, we will be returning to this location simply because of the outstanding location, easy access to the Ferries which connect us to Capri, Amalfi/Ravello and the main town which has numerous shops, restaurants, grocery stores etc.
