WE STAYED IN JULY OF 2010, NOT 2011.
Our first time EVER vacationing in Italy was at this hotel. It is rated by a ton of different travel companies, including Michelin with outstanding ratings. The rooms were nice and large, and the view was amazing. The concierge are great people, and they will go above and beyond to meet your needs. They will help you plan day trips to Pompeii and other historical sites.
The pros definitely out-way the cons for this hotel.
The pros include the room size, the TV with enough English speaking channels to please any American or Brit. The view is breathtaking. You can see the tremendous mountainside of the Amalfi Coast as well as the sea and pretty much all of Positano. The breakfast is delicious and you should definitely try both their hot chocolate and of course, their cappuccino. The bus stop is right outside the hotels main doors, and there are these beautiful handmade clay and wood homes, churches and tiny roads in a rock to the right of the hotel at the bus stop. There is a water fountain there as well. Walking distance to the center of Positano takes you about 25-30 minutes. There are a ton of wonderful restaurants on the way, and the view on the way down is to die for.
Okay, now the cons. The first thing you will notice is that there are no "sidewalks" so once you walk out of the hotel you are on the street. You MUST watch out for cars and the buses of course, especially if you have little children. Don't get spooked out by this though, the bus stop is about 10 feet away and the road widens up around the curve where the hotel is. The second thing were the ants that we found on the floor and on our sheets. You must realize though, that the hotel is pretty much in the rocks and it is very moist from all the water running down, which makes it a perfect environment for ants to survive and thrive. All you have to do is just make sure you check your room before going to sleep and you should be fine.
Overall, this hotel was amazing. We stayed here in July, 2010 and we would have gone back to it again, but our next trip during August of 2011, we decided to really experience the full Italian lifestyle by renting out a villa for a week.
