“Great hotel - best in Pistoia!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 February 2009

Incredible view, excellent restaurant, beautiful early 19th century structure. Ask to see the chapel. Just 10 minutes by car to the historic center of Pistoia. Great walk through the hills above the hotel. Rooms are quite comfortable, silent and elegant. There is no internet if you care about that. The owner doesn't speak English but the receptionists do. Will defintely return.

“Don't stay here!”

My husband and I booked this hotel as the pictures show a nice quite pool with lots of loungers, ideal for the country break we were looking for. Upon arrival we found out that the pool is open to the public, this meant that when we strolled down to the pool this morning we were greated by a queue of about 50 local teenagers and familes who were waiting for it to open, needless to say we didn't get one of the 17 loungers they actually have, we could not even lay around the pool but were allocated a small space on the grass two levels up! and the pool was far to crowded to swim in, we counted 50 people at one point. I went to complain to the manager about this, and the fact that fruit at breakfast was mouldy, only to find him rude and unhelpful. He explained that he only speaks Italian and French and nobody else in the entire hotel can speak English, despite stating on their website that they are multi-lingual.
I have also overhead lots of other people complaining about various things, all of whom were treated just as badly as I was.
This is a shame as the hotel has great potential.

“chamless welcome”

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice building with comfortable rooms, in quite a nice (and certainly quiet) location quite some way out of Pistoia (nothing else around - so make sure you book their restaurant if you don't want to drive). It has a 'big', albeit not very spectacular view of the valley below. BUT... we booked two nights through Tripadvisor/Venere arrived with our confirmation, the owner said no, we only have a booking for one night so tough and not his problem and basically told us that we should not have booked through Venere. He reluctantly let us use his computer to try to find a hotel for the next night. The hotelier seemed more interested in his local business crowd as the hotel was full of suited businessmen so we felt that we may have been 'bumped' out of our second night's booking - if this is his core trade then well, it's his business, but bear it in mind if you are booking and don't expect the usual warm Tuscan welcome if you are a mere tourist. Also the pool looks inviting from afar but up close it was filthy and full of wriggling worms - needless to say we didn't go in.

“Could be fabulous”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 June 2007

Up a mile of winding country lane the hotel is a former monastery. Striking architecture and a great location in gardens 20 miles from Florence and with views over the Tuscan countryside make it a great spot. The rooms are clean and well furnished, if a little gloomy, but that's the monastic life. The restaurant is more than adequate - a lot of locals have their weddings and other parties there. It could be a fabulous hotel if it were not for the service - or lack of it. Be warned, we were not, the restaurant is closed on Monday evenings and the nearest place to eat is in Pistoia, 3 miles away. Monday is also the evening most Italian restaurants and shops close so don't expect much choice there either. The swimming pool only has water in it from June to September. British guests will definitely make the link with Fawlty Towers.

“mysterious monkery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 June 2005

An appropriate "ill wind" whipped up from the perfect summer evening as we sat enjoying the view across the valley below us from the open air of il Conventos outdoor dining area/courtyard. Feasting on the most delicious of food in the stark but yet oddly ambient surroundings. My wine glass toppled in the wind which like all good horror movies seemed to spring from nowhere suiting the strange situation we seemed to find ourselves dining in - my dress and food were covered in the yummy wine ( too scrumptious to waste!) and we all shivered as the temperature dropped rapidly and the excitement and spooky reputation of the old monestery grew whilst the attentive young Sicillian waiter ushered us inside to stark if yet strangely cosy cell to warm and continue the delicious feed - apologising for the spilled wine and small comotion outdoors. Il Convento is a must. My husband and our two children (9 + 10) loved this spooky but addictive experience - we will ( minus chidren) be back to spent a night!! We loved it !!! Go! Step inside you imagination and enjoy.
