“Good facilities, but in need of major renovations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 July 2011

I spent four nights at the Hotel Ariston. The facilities of the resort exceeded my expectations; I enjoyed the several outdoor pools, one indoor pool, and a fitness center. Wi-fi was free here, and available throughout the guest rooms and public areas. The extensive buffet breakfast was served daily in the main restaurant.

The Ariston's worst aspect would have to be its rooms. They are massive in size for any standard, some of the largest I've ever stayed in. There were two queen beds and a double vanity in the bathroom. These upsides, unfortunately, were offset by the poor quality of my room's interior. The lighting was terrible; I could barely read at night if I wasn't sitting right under the bedside lamp. The furnishings appeared very outdated and probably haven't been updated for several decades. Although the bathroom did include double sinks, it was repulsive to take a shower underneath a moldy ceiling. The harsh fluorescent lighting did little to help this situation.

Overall I think that the Ariston offers a wide variety of facilities typical at any resort, but be warned that you'll feel like you've stepped back into the 1970s during your stay at this gaudy hotel.

“Lovely, very comfortable hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2008

Absolutely superb modern hotel on the main road in Paestum. The room we had was huge and very comfortable. The staff was really helpful with bus timetables etc. When we wanted to view the Roman ruins, the hotel manager offered to take us there and pick us up to avoid transport problems. The hotel was about 15 minutes walk from the beach (where the hotel has a pavilion) and some lovely seafood restaurants. It is also only a couple of minutes walk from some great and inexpensive local restaurants. The hotel's restaurant was "eccentric" and the food rather variable.

“Large rooms, more for groups or business than leisure travel.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2007

We are a 60 year-old couple traveling independently in Italy for the first time. Our 3 week trip was arranged by a travel agent. We requested standard double rooms in smaller, interesting hotel. The hotels knew we were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary.

I asked my TA to book this hotel because I had stayed there in 1995 during a group trip commemorating the 50th anniversary of the landing at Anzio. I was traveling with my father-in-law who had mobility issues. It was perfect for that trip, less so for our vacation in 2007.

The rooms are very large, with flat screen TV and big bathrooms. Everything was clean. But the rooms looked exactly as they did 12 years ago, the same decor and furniture. The bathrooms were tired and need maintenance. Our room, #605, I think, was very dark and had no view. The dark furniture, draperies and bed spread did nothing to lighten the large room. It felt very cave-like.

We were traveling at the end of September and the outside pool area did not have any chaises or other poolside-type furniture. There were small tables and chairs. The area was being used for evening special functions. The indoor pool was open, but there was an additional 10 Euro per person per day charge to use it.

This hotel has banquet and conference facilities on property and seemed to be very popular for such functions. During our 3 day stay they hosted 2 weddings and 3 conferences.

The staff was professional and courteous. If we returned to the area there are other, more interesting hotels we would try.

My husband and I were delighted with the appearance of the room, the gorgeous view, the wonderfully friendly and accomodating staff, the beautiful and modern bathroom and shower, and the comfort and cleanliness of the whole place.

We are from Houston Texas USA, and will gladly recommend this hotel to any of our friends (and even our enemies!) traveling to Italy. We look forward to visiting again too.

“Huge rooms, great value”

Hotel Ariston was a nice surprise, considering it's reasonable price 120 euro including breakfast for two! Our room was HUGE! Not the most elegant, but certainly comfortable, clean and quite pleasent. The 'American bar' is a bit of a joke and well worth missing. The restaurant is good for breakfast but find somewhere else for dinner. The location is great as it is a very short and easy drive to the temples and adjoining museum, all very much worth seeing. Great place to spend a night in Paestum, I would return. Staff was helpful and friendly.
