We spent two nights at La Badia in mid-October. We have been to Italy many times and have stayed in some magnificent hotels, but this ranks among my favorites, for several reasons. First, staying in an old monastery is just fun and different. The grounds are very well maintained. The rooms are not huge, but it's a monastery, after all. The breakfast was lovely, plenty of fresh and varied foods. When we woke up in the morning, we heard the pastry van pulling up with its delivery. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
The location of La Badia was perfect for us. It took only about 1 1/2 hours by car from the airport in Rome. This was about the most we wanted to drive after a 9 hour flight, so it was great to be able to rest up in a quiet location. It only took us about 5 minutes to drive to the main parking garage in Orvieto, also very convenient. We took a trip to Civita Bagnareggio (highly recommended), and intended to go to another town in the afternoon, but we wanted to spend more time just hanging out at La Badia. We ended up sitting outside with cappucinnos and cookies brought to us by the staff. I hated to leave and will definitely try to stay there again.
