Val Gardena (Gardena Valley) in northern Italy is the gateway to the rugged beautiful Dolomites and three villages are located in the valley. One of them is St Ulrich (German name) or Ortisei (Italian) or Urtijei (Ladin, a local language that has existed since the 1st century). Val Gardena is located in Sud Tirol which was once part of Austria and so three languages are spoken and signs are in three languages. There are dozens are hotels in this valley and one of them is Hotel Hartmann www.hartmann-hotels.com
It is a family-run hotel that takes care of business in a very personalised way, but what sets it apart from others is the food. Owner Ezio explained that Chef Matteo takes great pride in making every evening meal a personal experience. And so he has menus printed in the language of his guests, be it German, Italian or English, and at breakfast each guest is asked to make his or her selection for the evening. Each meal is a 5-star experience of five or six courses. Our first night the menu was 1 salad from the buffet; 2 buffalo mozzarella with wild boar salami and tomato bruschetta; 3 sugar beet consomme with shredded pancakes and chives or Sardinian gnocchi with sausage, parsely and pepper or lasagnette with bolognese and chanterelles. Main course: loin of suckling pig with speck dumplings or rolls of veal stuffed with ham and sage, saffron rice and baked zucchini....with a dish for vegetarians of smoked swordfish with orange, melon and arugola. There was a choice of four desserts. The next night I loved the puff pastry strudel stuffed with courgettes, ham and cheese on tomato mirror and olive pesto. Buy wine on the first night and it will be on your table (the same for every meal) every evening. Our waiter from Slovakia spoke perfect Italian, German and English and couldn’t do enough for us, right down to lemon slices for the mineral water.
If you want help selecting from the many chairlifts and cable cars to the numerous mountains that line both sides of the valley, just ask Ezio who will point out the most scenic and worthwhile according to your physical needs.
