So, after much deliberation, we decided to stay a week at Villa Poggiano.
I can tell you that our first impression, coming from New York City then three nights in Rome, was that we were stunned at how quiet and peaceful the grounds and setting are at the Villa.
The building is comfortable and clean and well appointed with everything you can ask a Tuscan countryside villa to be.
The aesthetic is spot on. The furniture, art, doors, windows and finishes all remind you that you are indeed in a fine, traditional, Tuscan-Italian home. There is a small bar in the common room with some basic liquors and grappa to which we modestly helped ourselves nightly.
The beds were big and comfortable. Everything in the room was functional and the daily service was reliable and unobtrusive.
We were in the suite and enjoyed having two rooms and a large bathroom, though a bathtub instead of the large shower stall might’ve been better appreciated in a room that size. We do understand that water conservation is a regional necessity.
The owner/host is a delightful woman named Stefania who speaks fine English and is as helpful as anyone could possibly want her to be without going over the top. We learned quickly not to doubt her expertise in navigating the vineyards and towns and could not have had the great beach day in La Maremma without her insight and direction.
My wife and I live next to a hotel in NYC and often witness out-of-town guests asking the hotel staff for area advice. Often that advice is given by a desk clerk who has very little idea what’s truly available in this neighborhood and commutes from outer-lying areas daily.
Stefania is not that person. A casual conversation with her revealed she is from the Montepulciano area originally and lives there with you in the hotel.
She knows exactly what’s around within several hour’s drive, has a pretty good idea of what people want to see and do, and gives advice only that is asked for without pushing any agenda.
She is a most welcome asset to your stay in Montepulciano.
The pool is not to be missed. The breakfasts were a great way to start the day, especially the homemade yogurt and local honey, fresh eggs, juices and cappuccini.
Wi-Fi is spotty in the building as is the area’s 3G and cell service, so be prepared to lose some of the modern technology you may currently depend on, but that could be a good thing.
Anyway, the Villa has a computer desk with internet access and printer at guests' disposal at all times.
Overall, we had an extraordinarily pleasant stay at Villa Poggiano and would not hesitate to recommend the hotel to anyone. The reasonable rates suggest you could probably spend more on a hotel, but I can’t imagine what else you could need in terms of service, ambiance and comfort.
If you’re thinking of visiting Tuscany, you are right to consider a stay at Villa Poggiano.
